Moses eats, sleeps and breathes music. Yeah, we can’t get him to sleep most nights, because he’d rather stay up and write music or work out that new arrangement or practice or do social media or close a deal on a venue or any number of music related projects. Does he work too much? Hell yes. But we can definitely argue that he is also having way too much fun. Born and raised in Defiance, OH, Moses started his music career as soon as he could ride a bike. It was natural progression as his father was a musician. Moses went on to play Baritone Sax for the Fabulous Jades in California and the High Country Brass Senior Drum Corps in Denver. New to Colorado, Moses quickly climbed the local music scene ladder and built one of the strongest drawing and regionally recognized dance bands, The Moses Jones Band. He’s back at it again with Colorado wedding band Mr. J and the Smooth Expressions. They are a 12- piece variety dance/party band that will make your feet beg you to get out on the dance floor. If you’re looking for something different for your event entertainment, then look no further than The Mash Masters. Mashups are created by taking contemporary and vintage songs from all genres and combining them to produce a unique and most definitely, danceable sound. Moses released his original work this year on a CD appropriately titled “Legendary”. Moses subscribes to the belief that bigger is better. His cover bands may be 12-piece, complete with a horn section, but his original band, Moses Jones Rock Funk Orchestra, is an 18-piece band. Ya, we thought you’d have to read that again. Be on the lookout for the Orchestra tour dates in 2015. If that isn’t enough to keep this all around, fun-loving guy busy, Moses works as an agent for Alpine Music Connection and Road Dawg Touring booking event entertainment, festivals, weddings, private events and more. Don’t forget he runs his own promotions and publicity company, MJ Entertainment. What a busy guy!!
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What city and state are you from?
MOSES JONES: I am originally from Defiance, Ohio. I grew up in San Bernardino, California and now I reside in Denver, Colorado.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What is your musical background?
MOSES JONES: I started playing music at 5 years old. I started on flute but then learned Piano followed by four varieties of Saxophone: Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Baritone. I also learned to play Tuba, Baritone, Percussion, and Drums.
During High School joined the various school bands and at 17, I joined my first funk band, The Fabulous Jades. It was a 16-piece band and the big band format stuck with me through the years.
I started the Moses Jones band in 2009 and have since expanded, building the Mr. J & the Smooth Expressions band, the Moses Jones Quartet, the After Hours Crew band and the Moses Jones Rock Funk Orchestra. I have also been booking much local talent with Alpine Music Connection, which is a local booking agency and many national artists with Road Dawg Touring, a national blues booking agency for over 6 years. Overall, I have been playing music for 25+ years.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What are your songs about?
MOSES JONES: My songs talk about life experiences. Every Song has a message that I think will relate to everyone. The songs on this CD talk about encouragement, love, fun, heartbreak and more. For instance the song titled “Legendary” talks about what you did to be great today; how people will remember you, and to keep moving forward. This song was written after my friend, colleague and co-writer, died of an aneurism at 25. It really made me think about what kind of impact each individual makes on others.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What is your favorite song to perform? Why?
MOSES JONES: I love performing Funky Cruise off of the “Legendary” CD. I love performing it because it features the full 18-piece Rock Funk Orchestra and it always inspires the audience to get up and dance. It’s a medium tempo song that is very danceable and fun. Audiences everywhere appear to abandon their cares of the day, week, and year and enjoy the moment.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What has surprised you the most in the pursuit of a musical career in music?
MOSES JONES: I was surprised to discover that if you have a clear vision and believe strongly in that vision, other people will get behind you and usually push you to where you need to go; be your rock. I realized you are never on your own if you try and don’t give up. People respect and admire tenacity. There are many avenues out there that will help you to progress your music career.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: Who are your musical influences?
MOSES JONES: Many artists had a large influence in my music because I grew up listening and enjoying their songs, styles and lyrics. I found myself incorporating styles from greats such as Willie Jones, Bobby Blue Bland, BB King, Earth Wind & Fire, Lakeside, Tyrone Davis, Boyz 2 Men, Mariah Carey, Donna Summer, Whitney Houston, Laura Pausini, Elvis Crespo, Curtis Mayfield, and Sade. Music is my life; therefore I immerse myself into all styles. Nothing is off the board.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: How would you describe your music to people?
MOSES JONES: My music is a mixture of R&B Blues, Jazz, Rock, Funk, and Neo-Soul with a touch of Latin. It’s such a diverse mixture that you’ll be wondering how all of it came together. You’ve got blues covered with Walk This Road Alone, deep funk with Shake It, smooth R&B in East Colfax, and a powerhouse, soulful attitude in I’m Outta My Mind. This is why we have created the genre: Rock Funk because it captures everything from blues, pop and everything in between.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What makes you stand out from other artists?
MOSES JONES: I stand out from other artists because of my diverse approach to music. I created songs that would relate to anybody regardless of race, style or age. I also perform with an 18-piece rock funk orchestra, which is very different from the artists today. We also have a fully choreographed show with custom wardrobes and more.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What would you like to see changed in today’s music industry?
MOSES JONES: I would love to see real bands come back playing live music instead of being canned with tracks. I would love to see the music of today mean something like it did in the past. Songs do not stick around for a long time anymore because of that reason. I would love to see musicians respecting other musicians and being good people to their fans.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What are some upcoming projects you are currently working on?
MOSES JONES: I am currently working on my 2nd CD. This CD will feature greats like Blues Hall of Famer- Bobby Messano, Grammy Nominated Saxophonist- Tony Exum, and Colorado Legend Hazel Miller among others. I am also working on a Christmas Album and a full Blues Album. We are hoping to release our 2nd CD by spring 2016 and our Christmas Album by December 2015.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What are your career goals? Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
MOSES JONES: I would like to start a trend to bring back the big bands. I want to allow people to feel my music and not just listen to it while the music creates beautiful memories for them. As music is so important in education, I plan to I start a music foundation to bring music back into schools.
In 10 years I see myself being a well known and well respected individual in the music industry. I see myself in the movies, TV Shows, performing in some of the biggest events around and holding a Grammy. I feel I have a lot to offer and could be a strong influence to other musicians and people. I want to encourage everyone that if you put your mind to it, you can do anything.
