Casey Anthony was acquitted yesterday (July 5th) of killing her two-year-old daughter, Caylee, in 2008, with jurors returning the stunning verdict after less than 11 hours of deliberation following a weeks-long Florida trial during which it had been widely believed that the 25-year-old Anthony would be found guilty. In addition to finding Anthony not guilty of first degree murder, for which she could have received the death penalty, the jury also cleared her of manslaughter and child abuse charges. She was convicted only of four misdemeanor counts of lying to investigators, and she could very likely be released from jail with time served when she’s sentenced Thursday, after having already spent nearly three years behind bars. The jurors refused to talk to the media afterward, and requested that their names be kept secret. State’s Attorney Lawson Lamar said they were disappointed in the verdict, but acknowledged the lack of hard evidence, particularly as relating to the cause of death, because it took six months for Caylee’s body to be found in the woods near the Anthony family’s home.

Prosecutors had argued that Anthony suffocated Caylee with duct tape and dumped her body in the woods because she wanted to be able to spend time with her boyfriend and live a carefree life. They presented evidence of all the lies Anthony told to her family and friends while Caylee was missing, including saying her daughter was with a nanny who turned out not to exist, and her partying during the month before she reported her daughter missing, including taking part in a hard body contest at a nightclub. But the defense contended Caylee accidentally drowned in the family swimming pool and her mother panicked. They also argued Anthony’s father helped cover up what had happened, and that Anthony acted the way she did because of the traumatic effects of sexual abuse by her father. Anthony’s father denied both the abuse and cover-up claims.

A number of celebrities were outraged on Tuesday (July 5th) after Casey Anthony was found not guilty of murdering her two-year-old daughter Caylee. Casey was, however, found guilty on four counts of providing false information to a law officer and is scheduled to be sentenced on Thursday morning.
