IAA SPOTLIGHT-Get To Know-LEI ROW-Harrisburg’s Uprising Star!

IAA:  What city and state are you from?

LEI ROW:  I am from Harrisburg, PA, but Philly is my second home!  This is also where I currently reside and rest when I’m not out on the road.

IAA:  What is your music background?

LEI ROW:  Although I wasn’t formally trained in music, my musical foundation started in the church.  I grew up singing in the choir and then eventually in school talent shows and around the city in different showcases.

During my high school years, I was a part of a short-lived girl group called “Untitled” (and #SHOUTS to my girls Kijuanna & Tori).  We were the protégé group of a popular r&b male trio “Tresan,” which consisted of 3 talented singers, Grump, Boo-Bop, and Jim Beanz.  Jim Beanz is now one of super-producer Timbaland’s TOP producers and song-writers.  Being a part of the girl-group and working with “Tresan” influenced me greatly.  I was also introduced to the art of songwriting and vocal production around this time.

After we disbanded, I went to college to pursue my degree, but I never put the pen or mic down!  Throughout my college and after, I continued singing, writing, and performing.  Today, here I am, still at it, but further along in my career.

IAA: Why do you want to record and release your own music?

LEI ROW:  Well besides “because I can” (lol), I have a gift and style that will give folks a groove and understanding that is necessary.  Many people talk so much about keeping up with the “pop” audience and younger generation. I always asks, What about my generation and beyond?  Nowadays, we are missing the hell out of the music we grew up to and I would like to emphasize on creating, incorporating, and re-creating that sound and style!  This is also another reason why I’ve been called the Urban-Retro Songstress.

IAA:   What are your songs about?

LEI ROW:  I have so many different songs that touch on different topics.  My songs that have been publicly released focus on the ups and downs of love and companionship.

I am a huge fan and lover of hip-hop and 80s rock. These genres have a great influence in my writing and production.

As a singer/songwriter, I have performed and written in different genres other than r&b/soul and pop.  I have written and performed electro, hip-hop, and jazz, and I don’t plan on stopping there!

IAA:  Who is your fan base directed towards?

LEI ROW:  Well, in question #3, I expressed that I would like to reach out to my generation, however I am not limiting my fan base to just my group.  My fan base is directed towards any and every one who is open to hear good necessary music from Lei Row of course .

IAA:  Who are your musical influences?

LEI ROW:   Sheesh!  I don’t have enough space or time to answer this question lol!  I’ll go with one of my “random-but-prized top-6” and they are:  Michael Jackson, The Beatles, J. Dilla, The Notorious B.I.G., Mary J. Blige, and Beyonce.

IAA: How would you describe your music to people ?

LEI ROW:  My music is going to make you nod your head, snap your fingers, relax you, make you vibe, dance, and rewind to make sure you caught what I said.  I took these descriptions from others who have described my music lol!

I incorporate melodic soul, heartfelt lyrics, and a chic vintage style into my musical presentation. This helps to bring out my urban-retro flavor and sound in my music.

My music is a combination of all of my success, failures, experiences, and musical influences, rolled up into one big heart and placed inside my soul.

IAA: What makes you stand out from other artists?

LEI ROW:  I stand out from other artists because I’m such a loner with a lot of passion and humility.  I have adapted to the “self-made” route.  I don’t wait for everyone’s approval to pursue my musical goals and get the word out.  Although the speed varies a lot in this grind, I love every minute of it and the support I’ve gained so far is fantastic!  I am truly grateful.

Also, the next question (#9) will tell you some more about what makes me stand out .

IAA:  What are some upcoming projects, you are currently working on?

LEI ROW:  Well I’m always working on new music.  I’ve been working on new music for myself which will be released in 2012 and other artists and producers—pursuing placement and production deals.   Also, I still push my last project Lei Row Presents Euphoria, which can be previewed and purchased on iTunes, Amazon digital, Last FM, and/or CD Baby.

I recently became a singer/songwriter for the “Songs of Love Foundation” (http://www.songsoflove.org/songwriters/leirow/).  The “Songs of Love Foundation” is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing personalized songs for children and teens currently facing tough medical, physical or emotional challenges, free of charge.  I just finished my first song for a beautiful little girl named “Ava” from Park Ridge, Illinois.  Feel free to check it out on the “Songs of Love Jukebox” page (here:  http://www.songsoflove.org/jukebox11.php) and/or on my Soundcloud page (here: http://soundcloud.com/leirow/songs-of-love-song-for-ava-by) and the song is called “Ava.”  I consider this to be one of my biggest accomplishments ever!

I entered the DJ world as “DJ Woriel,” which is “Leirow” spelled backwards J.  Ever since I was a little girl, I wanted to be a DJ (thanks to Spinderella, Jam Master Jay, and DJ Jazzy Jeff lol)!   Lately, I’ve been  shadowing my mentors and helping them spin in some popular clubs and bars in Harrisburg (#SHOUTS to Deejay B.E. & DJ Gillateen).  I’m so glad my mentors have faith in me and super excited about this journey!  I’ll be spinning on my own real soon so be on the lookout for “DJ Woriel”!

I also have plans to do the acting thing again.  I’m working on a role for a play coming to the Harrisburg area in January 2012.  So I’ll keep everyone posted about that!

IAA:What are your career goals? Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

LEI ROW:  Aside from owning my own home and seeing my student loans completely paid off (lol), my career goals are to expand in my business (#SHOUTS to “THEEM Music & Entertainment”), placing all types of hit records, hopefully win a grammy or two, and become a worldwide phenomenal songstress, writer, producer, and dj!  I would like all of these goals to be successfully accomplished and mastered within 10 years and continuously throughout my life.
