JASTIN ARTIS: I was born in Salt Lake City, Utah. I spent half of my life in Alexandria, VA and the other half in NC with a few other random places in between. I have currently been living in Wilmington, NC for the past three years.
IAA: What is your music background?
JASTIN ARTIS: My musical background is that I started in band about fourth grade playing the clarinet. I played that instrument just to be around the pretty ladies. But along the way I really became involved in learning music from every aspect. As I grew older, going into middle school, hip-hop became my life. I remember listening to the radio and taping the DJ shows every night especially on the weekend. That was a big hobby of mine as I attended high school. It wasn’t until college that I taught myself how to play guitar. So, music has always been in my system but took me awhile to realize it was attached to me. Music is my character. I always wrote poetry and that transcended into me becoming a songwriter.
IAA: Why do you want to record and release your own music?
JASTIN ARTIS: Music is my method to help elevate people and push them to be better. My goal of making music is to point out subjects we overlook and pretend we don’t care about but do. Music is a way of healing, learning, releasing, and becoming new. Of course it is a personal release for me but at the end of the day God tells me what to write about while making it unique. So many times in positive music we say the problem and just sing about that. I’m here to state the problems AND give a solution. I grow with my fans and my fans grow with me, into better men and women.
IAA: What are your songs about?
JASTIN ARTIS: My songs cover life; from love to God to sadness to good times to bad times. My songs are personal but also come from observing and watching the world. I always strive to keep things positive because I want my music to be heard everywhere without any editing! That way people know what I said and no extra time in the studio!
IAA: Who is your fan base directed towards?
JASTIN ARTIS: Statistics currently show that my fans range from young women ages 18-24. However, my personal feeling is that my music is for everyone. I’ve seen four year olds sing my songs but I’ve also seen 60+ year olds singing my songs. I think my music fits for everyone because I don’t keep it just one dimensional. I think fans find themselves in the music. Once they do that they become a fan.
IAA: Who are your musical influences?
JASTIN ARTIS: My influences range from Michael Jackson, Queen Latifah, to John Mayer, Alanis Morissette, Dave Mathews, Coldplay, Esperanza Spalding. From Jay-Z, Nas, Kanye, B.O.B, Eminem to Stevie Wonder, Donnie Hathaway, Jem, Kenna, Timbaland, The Neptunes, and Ryan Leslie. The influences are endless.
IAA: How would you describe your music to people?
JASTIN ARTIS: My genre is Hip-Hop Renaissance. This dissects down to gospel, hip-hop, acoustic, and spoken-word. Those are the main elements that make my music. The gospel genre lets the world know I do believe. I make a reference to God in everything I do and I love sharing that. I hope people receive him and convert to build their relationship with Him or to start a relationship with Him. But aside from God representing love to me He also represents being “better” and “elevation.” I use the other elements to share that gospel and rawness of being creative and being personal. My music is made to fit the setting the fan is in. Maybe you are trying to hear a word from God; you want to listen to something to get you thinking of yourself and your life in a better light. Or maybe you just want that real hip-hop. Or maybe you just want to listen to the guitar and be at peace. Or maybe you want no music and you just want words; so you go for the spoken-word. I feel there is something for everyone even if it is something new.
IAA: What makes you stand out from other artists?
JASTIN ARTIS: I’m an artist that wants to grow with his fans. I want my fans to be better men and women and I want them to make me better. My music is everlasting because of the place it comes from. My sound is unique and I stay true to that. I’m more focused on making people around me better because I believe it will make the world better. I love music for what it does when it’s used for what it’s meant for. Lastly, I’m an artist who you’ll see the same way anywhere I go. If I need to act more professional then I do. But I strive to be who I am everywhere I go. I’m not perfect but I try to keep my standard. I am the bridge from where you are to where you want to be.
IAA: What are some upcoming projects you are currently working on?
JASTIN ARTIS: Well, after graduating from NC A&T State University I haven’t been able to really work on any projects. And with three projects already out, I’m excited to say I’ll be working on an acoustic EP with acoustic guitar and spoken-word currently called “Getting Ready…”. My fans have been asking for it and I’m ready to give it to them. This will prepare me for my first full album, Love Frequency. LF is due probably late 2013. Lastly, I’m looking to collaborate with artists and producers. I’m even looking to put out a tribute song for Trayvon Martin. But honestly however God moves on me that’s how I’ll work. Most importantly I’m in the season of listening to past great albums and study that to better create for the future.
IAA: What are your career goals? Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
JASTIN ARTIS: I will be an established professional recording artist, songwriter, musician, and producer. I will use music and other gifts to help the world be better. Further down the road I want to open a songwriting school for songwriters. I want to teach the natural and spiritual aspects of writing and creating music. Overall, I want to continue being the bridge from where you are to where you want to be by using music and other methods to make that happen.
