Getting his start with rapping and writing lyrics in his teens, at 19 he formed a rap group called the Flamin Bird Souljhaz with a few close friends.
After investing in himself and his career, with the proper equipment, he taught himself how to record vocals, about production and making beats.
He currently has a mix-tape out with his group and is consistently working on more projects, working to reach new levels.
IAA: What city and state are you from?
LIL RICO: Phoenix, Arizona.
IAA: What is your music background?
LIL RICO: I’ve been rapping since the age of 15. Ten years now. At 18, I recorded my first vocals in the studio. I created my rap group at 19 and got my own equipment, and started recording my own music at 23. I’ve done about 12 to 15 gigs. I have 1 mix-tape out and am currently working on various projects.
IAA: Why do you want to record and release your own music?
LIL RICO: This is what I love to do and it’s my passion. I want to showcase my talent and start branding myself.
IAA: What are your songs about?
LIL RICO: My songs are about my life, current and past events. I also try to make songs that you can dance to and play in the clubs and party songs.
IAA: Who is your fan base directed towards?
LIL RICO: It would have to be directed towards the Rap and Hip-Hop crowd. I would say from the ages of 16 to 30. People who like to dance and party and can relate to struggling and poverty.
IAA: Who are your musical influences?
LIL RICO: Some of my music influences will have to be Ludacris, 50 Cent, and Nelly. I used to listen to them a lot when I was younger.
IAA: How would you describe your music?
LIL RICO: I try to tell stories with my music and keep a little humor in it. I try to make people laugh at least once when hearing one of my songs.
IAA: What makes you stand out from other artists?
LIL RICO: I think the ability to adapt to a lot of different beats and genres makes me stand out from other artists. I’m very diverse and have a lot of rapping styles also. I can do more than just rap. I make beats and do my own production.
IAA: What are some upcoming projects you are currently working on?
LIL RICO: I’m going to be working on a mix-tape for myself. I’m also going to be working on an album with my brother. I have a small project with Big Lip Radio I’m currently working on. Also, working on songs with my group.
IAA: What are your career goals? Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
LIL RICO: Some of my career goals: Having my own label. I want to have my own big studio, become a well know artist, producer, and beat maker. In ten years, I see myself financially stable, being able to help out my family and give back to the community. By then I will have my own label, a bunch of albums out and a lot of fans that will appreciate my music.
