IAA: What is your music background?
FLOSTORM: I am a professional musician with a do it myself album. Most of my best work has been done in a basement. I would say that I am a true underground mc.
IAA: What are your songs about?
FLOSTORM: My songs are about how I am feeling, so they cover several themes. Women, the state of hip hop, the state of our country, being twisted, parties, and poverty have all been discussed throughout my songs. A great bulk of the music is lyrical flexing, but I do branch out.
IAA: Do you write your own music?
FLOSTORM: I definitely write my music. I write music to fit my voice and style, therefore I do not think anyone else can do it the way I can. I feel that no one can generate emotions in a song the way the songwriter can.
IAA: Who are your musical influences?
FLOSTORM: A short list of my musical influences include Lupe Fiasco, Promise Nyc, Nas, Common, Mos Def, Kendrick Lamar, Wayne, Jay-Z, The Script, Rakim, Run-DMC, Beastie Boyz. I feel like every artist has something unique about them that has helped them achieve their goals. I can learn something from every one of those emcees, rock bands, etc.
IAA: How would you describe your music to people ?
FLOSTORM: I would describe my music as eccentric, lyrical, and full of metaphors. It will keep you on your toes and make you think. I am a lyricist and therefore I take great pride in getting oooohs and aaaahs when I spit a hot bar.
IAA: What makes you stand out from other artist ?
FLOSTORM: What makes me stand out from other artist is that I truly do what I do for the love of music. I believe lyricism is a craft that has been taken for granted. There are some great emcees out there. I do believe the currents trends are headed back towards lyricism, but I still believe it can get better. I stick with the bars and try to make every single line count. I do not coast through a verse. I like it to be hard-hitting from beginning to end.
IAA: What are some upcoming projects, you are working on ?
FLOSTORM: I am working on a mixtape that I am going to call “The Category 3 Mixtape”, a nice little play on the Flostorm name. It will consist of a few songs and a few dope freestyles. It will be nice to bump for the summer time.
IAA: What are your career goals? Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
FLOSTORM: My goal is to do what I love for a living. I know that I am meant to do this. Anytime I think about putting the mic down, God lays something else out for me that encourages me to keep striving for greatness. That is what I plan on doing. I am going to say in ten years I see myself working on album number seven or something like that. I should have a couple of Grammys under my belt and enjoying life. I mean if I’m determined enough, why not?
