IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What is your music background?
MBM: People in our family have always had a love for music, especially the rap culture. We always envisioned ourselves doing something in the music or entertainment field. We just didn’t know what path we were going to take. One day about four years ago, bored in our apartment we had two cd’s full of beats from our cousin Cyn who was rapping at the time. We sat there and listened to the beats for a minute, started pitching ideas back and forth and then came to an agreement to what we were going to do. We picked up our pens and pads, and we’ve been on this path ever since.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: Why do you want to record and release your own music?
MBM: Music has always played a role in every aspect of our lives. Before this, we both played football and we used music to motivate us. We used it as fuel to energize us and dominate our opponent on the field. Nonetheless, even though we excelled exceptionally on the field we always really wanted to be musicians of some sort.
AIR MARLEY: I played the drums as a child because our pops used to play, but I always wanted to be the vocal one; the singer, but I don’t sing, so I rapped.
RICH THEE FLYGUY: I never saw myself rapping when I was young, but felt I was going to make a career in the music business in front or behind the camera somehow.
MBM: Making music has always been our passion. We always pictured ourselves being in music.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What are your songs about?
MBM: We like to classify our music as “Mood Swing.” We call it that because our music has real feelings to it. We talk on a serious note about real life situations from establishing yourselves, being independent, taking care of family, partying and women. The beat is what takes us there because you have to feel it. That’s how we get whatever message out that we’re trying to deliver.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: Who are your musical influences?
MBM: Us being from the Bay Area, as kids we grew up listening to a lot of local rappers. They range from Mack 10, Dre, E-40, Too Short, 3X Krazy, and Tupac of course, just to name a few. Outside of our area some other artist that have impacted us are Nas, Lil Wayne, Jay-Z, 50 Cent, and Kendrick Lamar.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: How would you describe your music to people?
MBM: It’s good music. It’s something the people can feel because we rap about our lives and things we’ve been through. Everyone has struggled and everyone wants to have a good time, therefore our music is what the people can feel. We do the things in our music and everything in between.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What makes you stand out from other artists?
MBM: First of all, we are brothers, yet we each have our own sound. We don’t try to emulate who’s hot. We stay within our own style to standout. We try to be creative with the music that we make. We’re always thinking outside of the box, figuring out what will catch the viewer’s attention. At the end of the day we love what we do, and our music is for everybody to enjoy.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: Tell us about one of the hardest challenges you had to face in your music career and how did you overcome?
MBM: Learning the language and the business aspect of the music industry was a challenge. Teaching ourselves how to network and get our music in the right hands was difficult at times. We have never been the type to give up when the situation got hard. Our minds were already made up that we were in this for the long haul. So we overcame these obstacles with hard work. We overcame with the same attitude and drive we had since we first started recording. We work hard to keep ourselves and the music out there. You got to stay in the face of the people and you do that by networking, going to events, etc. It’s nothing like connecting with the fans and having them being able to reach you or see you.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What are some upcoming projects you are currently working on?
MBM: Right now we’re in the process of recording songs for our self titled album (MBM) “My Brotha & Me”. We just released a mixtape “Certified Flyguyz” presents “My Brother & Me” : The Landing Vol. 2. “ We’ve shot two visuals off our latest mixtape ” Rufio ” and ” Hi-Five.” We’re also well into working on our solo mixtapes. “Feel My Aura ” will be the mixtape by Rich Thee Flyguy and Air Marley’s mixtape is titled: ” Fresh Breath of Air. “
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What are your career goals? Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
MBM: Our career goals are to plant our roots in this hip-hop industry and to make our own brand. We plan to turn one success into another, not only in the music industry but also in other fields. We want to become CEOs of our own record label and management company. We want to make a platform for upcoming artists like ourselves one day, especially out of the “Bay Area,” because it’s so much talent where we come from.
