IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What is your music background?
SCRU FACE JEAN: I have been rapping since I was 11. I started taking it more serious when I was 15. I released my first solo mixtape my freshmen year of high school. My older brother was a rapper and he got me into it. After that, I fell in love with it and haven’t looked back.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: Why do you want to record and release your own music?
SCRU FACE JEAN: I want to record and release music for many different reasons . The two most prominent reasons would be that I am a huge hip hop fanatic. For all the years I have listened to it, I’ve never seen the perspective of someone from where I’m from. There is a big voice not being spoken for. I fell like we have what it takes to be the ones who put our region on the map. The other reason would be the fact that nobody has made major progress in my area. There is a lot of self -doubt where I’m from but when we accomplish that goal we will have a permanent place in history. That is my ultimate goal. I want to be more then just another artist, but in fact the next artist to make an imprint in history.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What are your songs about?
SCRU FACE JEAN: I would like to say that my songs cover a various subject matters. For the sake of the question I would say my songs are about life through the eyes of someone like me. My songs are for someone who has overcome adversity to do something in a city not a lot of people see possible. My songs are for the person who has tried to fit into a different situation many times. I feel like there are many people who fall in that category so I speak for them. In my music I usually have a message, but I wrap it in a enjoyable package. I know how to get people to party and think without knowing it sometimes. I created energetic music that can get a party started and music to make people talk.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: Who is your fan base directed towards?
SCRU FACE JEAN: My fan base is directed more towards the high school to college kids. I have a lot of music promoting partying and having a good time. That is something both of those age groups enjoy. I have a very fast paced mentality to my performance. I have seen a lot more college and high school kids at my shows. I get a good response in college towns being that that’s where my core demographic started.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: Who are your musical influences?
SCRU FACE JEAN: My musical influence would have to be Jay-Z. The reason he impacted me so much is that I have studied him as well as listened to him. I look up to the way he learned to be more then just a good rapper. In almost every venture he goes through, he excels. Even in failure, he learns. I strive to be the same way. I want to be able to say I left a legacy like his when it’s all over. I want to come into the industry and learn as much as possible. Everything will be looked at as a new opportunity. Even in failure I want to gain knowledge.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: How would you describe your music to people?
SCRU FACE JEAN: I have always described my music as the balance. The balance between fun and thought. I have always been able to get a deep message across through lyrics. I also have catchy hooks, melodies and choruses to keep everyone repeating it. I have had fans tell me they listen to me during parties and also while studying. The people who listen to lyrics deeply will get something. The people who just listen to have fun will get something without the compromise of anything.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What makes you stand out from other artists?
SCRU FACE JEAN: The thing that makes me stand out as an artist, besides being from a region that has never had a major artist; is my ability to merge thought with partying. I have seen many rappers stay on one side of things. Every song which either makes them too “preachy” or “dumbed down,” but I have found a good blend between both. I have fans of all races, colors and creed. I strive on bringing everyone into my movement and making them feel as if they own a part of it.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What are some upcoming projects you are currently working on?
SCRU FACE JEAN: We just got back from San Francisco, where we were shot the 2013 TBP cypher video. Also, my next full length mixtape is set to be released on August 22nd ,2013, entitled W.I.N.G.S or We Invent the New Generations Sound. We are currently in talks with DJ Holiday to have him host the mixtape.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What are your career goals? Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
SCRU FACE JEAN: My career goals include many things, but manly being a mogul. I plan on using this to take me into many businesses and further strengthen my brand. In 10 years I want my brand to be in the conversation with other respected labels and brands. I want to go into many different ventures besides just rapping such as fashion, sports etc. The ultimate goal is to make a label that is strong enough to continue generating opportunity for years to come. I know all of this will only come with hard work and dedication, but I have no doubt in me or my team’s work ethic.
