“I am Nubia Emmon: a singer, songwriter, rapper, and dancer. I sing R&B, Hip-Hop, and Pop.”

Born in Austin, Texas- the “Capital of Live Music”- music flows through Nubia Emmon. A distant cousin of Mahalia Jackson, her father grew up performing in an R&B band along with his brothers and sisters, and her mother sang with Nubia still in the womb. Constantly being in the presence of her family’s artistry, this innate love of music was passed on to Nubia who started singing by the age of 3. At 7 Nubia formed her first group, “5BC” (5 Best Cousins), and sang and performed dance routines that Nubia choreographed for family events and various talent shows.

By 7th grade 5BC had dissolved, but Nubia continued singing and grew to love songwriting. Now, Nubia has widened her performances from school talent shows to both community events and major events, including: a SXSW show, performances with Boys II Men and Latoya Luckett, and a cameo at the Texas Urban Music Festival.

Recently Nubia has started performing at shows outside of Austin such as the 106 & Park audition in New York, the BET Hip-Hop Awards Showcases in Atlanta, the Peace Fest in Phoenix, and other venues in Texas and New York. Nubia is mainly a solo artist but has experience performing in duets and with live bands, including her brother’s band “Sillly Aces.” She also enjoys collaborations and has completed a remix of the track “Dancing Machine” with Def Jam’s recording artist, Lil Niqo.

“I realize what it takes: sacrifice and hard work, and whether I am working in the studio, at shows, in the community, or with other artists, my dream is to become a world class performer/entertainer. I am grateful to my listening fans and wish to give thanks to Austin’s KAZI (FM- 88.7) who voted me #1 in three categories: ‘Best Radio R&B Artist’, ‘Best Female Radio Song’ (for “Burn”), and ‘Best Female R&B Live 2012’ at the KAZI Radio Showcase Awards in December, 2012.”

Recently Nubia placed first in the New York Indalab “Makin’ History” Showcase (September, 2013) and won top honors at the HipHop Seazons #5 Showcase in New York (November, 2013).

Nubia is also passionate about important issues. “One of my signature projects is the ‘Pretty Girls that Rock the Mic’ concert series. The purpose is to raise awareness for breast cancer and to showcase the talent and diversity among female artists in Texas.” Inspired by her mother’s fight with breast cancer, Nubia already organized and held their first show in 2012. This event was not only very successful, but led to a partnership with the Susan G. Komen Foundation for Breast Cancer, Austin Affiliate.

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS:  What city and state are you from?

NUBIA EMMON:  I was born and raised in Austin, Texas. I spent three or four years in San Antonio during high school but Austin is my home.

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS:  What is your music background?

NUBIA EMMON:  I come from a very musical family. My father grew up performing in a family R&B band along with his brothers and sisters, and my mom sang while I was still in the womb…so I was always around music. I started singing by the time I was three and at the age of seven I formed my first group: “5BC” (5 Best Cousins). We sang and performed dance routines that I had choreographed at family events and various school talent shows. By the 7th grade, 5BC had dissolved but I continued singing and grew to love songwriting. I have been pursuing a music career seriously since around the 10th grade.

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS:  Why do you want to record and release your own music?

NUBIA EMMON:  I want to record and release my own music simply because I bring something different to the music industry: my own expression of the art. I have a lot to offer, from the music to just being a role model. My music is relatable to people of all different backgrounds, races, shapes, and sizes.

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS:  What are your songs about?

NUBIA EMMON:  My music is about real life experiences: having fun and enjoying life with all that it offers. This includes infatuations and break ups, stuff that you go through when you’re in high school. I like my music to bring back good memories of established artists and I’ll put some of their influences in my music. For example, in my song “Burn” I bring a Michael Jackson feel with Slick Rick and a little bit of Lisa Left Eyes. Or, my song “Blowin’ up” that includes a sample from Notorious B.I.G. When you hear it, it will remind you of his song but you can relate to “moving on” from a situation or just growing out of that situation.

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS:  Who are your musical influences?

NUBIA EMMON:  My musical influences are Etta James, Beyoncé, Aretha Franklin, Patsy Cline, Mary J. Blige, and Whitney Houston to name a few. I have admired their work ethic, commitment to the art, as well as their business sense- particularly Beyoncé who I see as both a business woman and an artist.

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS:  How would you describe your music to people?

NUBIA EMMON: My music is clean, positive, and fun all at the same time. Most of it is R&B and some rap, but I also have a few Pop tracks.

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS:  What makes you stand out from other artists?

NUBIA EMMON:  What makes me stand out from other artists is my versatility; I can sing, dance, rap, and write my own music. In addition, I sing R&B, Hip-Hop, and Pop and I have also dabbled in a little country. I can play with a band, in duets, and I can also play instruments. I have my own foundation and, as I stated above, my music is clean but fun. As a female rapper I like to stay radio friendly because I want all generations to enjoy my music.

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS:  Tell us about one of the hardest challenges you had to face in your music career and how did you overcome?

NUBIA EMMON:  One of the hardest things that I have had to overcome, and still battle with, is the stereotypes of the female artist. I have always told myself that I will never compromise myself for one bit of success. You don’t have to wear less clothing to get more attention. You don’t have to talk about irrelevant things or derogatory and degrading things to better yourself. I am much more than that. Maybe that works for some, but not for me. If I can’t do it in a classy and tasteful way then it isn’t for me.

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS:  What are some upcoming projects you are currently working on?

NUBIA EMMON:  New music, of course, and I am currently working on my new mix-tape and a new video. I am also working to formally launch my foundation (The Nubia Emmon Foundation) and a small Texas tour called “Pretty Girls that Rock the Mic” to raise awareness of breast cancer early detection and to highlight talented female artists.

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS:  What are your career goals? Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

NUBIA EMMON:  My career goals consist of me being a world class performer and a household name so that I can bring more attention to my foundation and the issues that I care about, such as: healthy living, healthy relationships, girl empowerment, and motivating the youth to succeed. My long term goals are to get into an executive position in this very male-dominated music industry.

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS:  How can your fans access your music and contact you?

NUBIA EMMON:  I can be reached through my manager, Karriem Williams, at 404-314-9113 or karriemwilliams@gmail.com. My fans can connect with me on my Facebook LIKE page at Nubia Emmon, follow @TeamNubia, or through my website www.nubiaemmon.com.
