Hiydrus was born April 21st, 1986 as George Quincy Cundiff III in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. At the age of 5 he started playing the drums, but shortly thereafter with the separation of his parents he no longer perused music. Growing up, he was influenced by many different musicians within his family and professional artists. His musical influences would help mold him later in life when he would reconnect again with a passion he had stepped away from. After graduating high school Hiydrus enlisted into the military and after being Honorably Discharged he still did not see his potential to reconnect with music other than listening to it. It wasn’t until 2012 when he found out his true calling. After work he sat down and tried writing a poem this ignited a fire within him to pursue a once lost childhood dream. Hiydrus got his name from wanting to be truly unique. Using the name from a constellation named Hydrus and what it represents the name Hiydrus was born. Since then he has been collaborating with other independent artists to build a foundation and is working on his first mix tape. Hiydrus being self-taught in song writing, vocals, music theory and engineering his songs he has recorded shows his dedication to his personal growth and development as an artist.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What city and state are you from?
HIYDRUS: I was born and raised in Winston-Salem, North Carolina in the Piedmont Triad. A lot of people from here refer to it as “Tre-Fo” or just “Winston”
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What is your music background?
HIYDRUS: My music background was really driven from my father’s side of the family being musically inclined. My grandmother went to college in Chicago when she was younger for music. Her background revolved around vocals and piano. My grandfather background included the strings, vocals, and he played the piano as well. My father took up percussion as his main discipline which he still does to this day. He also does vocals, wind and string instruments from time to time. My uncle on my father’s side was strictly bass guitar and my aunt was vocals as well. I could go as far as to say it’s in my blood. When I was young I played drums and eventually branched away from that. I was also the singer in a band in high school. After high school, I stepped away from music to pursue other career interests but just shy of the last two years I have reconnected with it again. It went from me seeing if I could write a poem which turned into a song that led to a passion for it.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: Why do you want to record and release your own music?
HIYDRUS: Recording and releasing my own music gives me and the listener a feeling of it truly being genuine and original from the time I write a song, record it, mix and master it then release it. When you do something yourself and you put forth the man hours in making sure it is perfect. When you work on making it the best, then it’s something you can take pride in. It in turn shows people around me that I am dedicated to my craft.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What are your songs about?
HIYDRUS: My songs are drawn and written from experience, teachings, lessons learned and everyday events throughout life. I feel cover a multitude of subjects pending the person/s listening. If someone were to ask me about my life I would tell them to listen to my music. There are times where I may put something in there about myself so there is another avenue for a person to connect with what I am saying.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: Who are your musical influences?
HIYDRUS: I grew up listening to Nas, Jadakiss, Talib Kewli, Common, Black Ice, Atmosphere, DMX, Lenny Kravitz, Jimmy Hendrix, Pantera, Nirvana, Muddy Waters, Ray Charles, Sade, Isaac Hayes, The Isley Brothers, Marvin Gaye, Audioslave, (Hed) P.E., P.O.D., Taproot, Bob Marley, Bone Thugs N Harmony, Tupac, Disturbed, Gang Star, Incubus, Sevendust, Paul Wall, Slim Thug and many more. These artists, people and bands are important to me due to all of them connecting with me through real life situations across decades and many genres of music. They did make music that was for many people to listen to, but it always delivered a message. Individuality and being you, are the core reasons on how they influenced me.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: How would you describe your music to people?
HIYDRUS: My music is for everyone to listen to. I say this only because it could be that one line, word or emotion sent to the listener that could change how they approach a situation but may lead to how they resolve it as well no matter how big or small, positive or negative. My lyrics inspire and excite. It opens new windows of thought but can be played while at a party or a workout. All in all it’s me.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What makes you stand out as an artist?
HIYDRUS: Things I have been through in life and the different cultures I’ve seen and experienced give me the ability to show people different sides of the spectrum that they may not ever experience in their life time or on a day to day basis. By not having a one tracked mind at a young age and listening to different genres help me adapt that much quicker to a song I want to write. This includes the direction I want to go with the song and how it’s put together from start to finish. Being a well-rounded artist is very important to me.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: Tell us about one of the hardest challenges you had to face I your music career and how did you overcome?
HIYDRUS: One of the hardest things to overcome but the easiest are the sacrifices I make for my family. As a man I have to provide my child with everything I did not receive as a child because every generation builds for the next. At times over the past two years I have had to slow my progression with music to make sure she is taken care of. Parents sometimes give up on their dreams. I am showing her what it is like to chase them in the mist of what I have on my shoulder. To always have drive, dedication and determination but to most of all believe in herself.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What are some upcoming projects you are currently working on?
HIYDRUS: I am currently working on a mix tape that I am going to release in the near future. In the mean time between then and now I am still collaborating with artists from my hometown and the US to other places in the world.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What are your career goals? Where do you see yourself in ten years?
HIYDRUS: I have set both short and long term goals for myself. My short-term goals at the smallest level are to always be better than yesterday and to strive for nothing less than perfection in anything and everything I do related to music. My long-term goals are to continue to make music for not only my generation but many generations after mine. I want to be looked at as a timeless artist. 10 years from now I still see myself helping people through music by providing good entertainment for them to listen to but giving them something to link to special moments of their life to and provide an escape. Songwriting and engineering but with my dedication and drive producing artists that started from the same place we all do and to build them up from there.
