IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What city and state are you from?

JAY BLACK:  I was born in Brooklyn, New York but growing up I’ve lived all over being a military brat. We actually didn’t live in any one place longer than five years. A few places in the U.S.  I’ve lived in are New York, Utah, Texas, Virginia, Puerto Rico and a couple countries I’ve lived in are Italy and Germany. Every time I moved to a new place a part of that culture stuck with me so when asked where I’m from I reply all over the place.

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What is your music background?

JAY BLACK:  I started writing and making beats in high school but recorded my first song in college. I’ve been fine tuning my skills since. I’ve been getting better every day.

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: Why do you want to record and release your own music?

JAY BLACK:  Music is not just a thing I do or a tune I listen to, I feel like it’s a part of me. The most memorable moments of my life can be associated with a song. Whenever one of those songs comes on I instantly remember what I was doing, where I was at, or the feeling I had at the time. Growing up this seemed to be true for my family as well. It was nice to see my mom smile from listening to her favorite songs even through some of our tough times. I first wanted to make my own songs to duplicate that feeling for my mom, myself, and whoever else gave my music a listen.

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What are your songs about?

JAY BLACK:   In a word the answer to this question would be me. The majority of my songs are about how I’m feeling, past experiences, and friendships for example. With that being said the content of any song I make is based off the feeling the beat gives me.

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: Who are your musical influences?

JAY BLACK:  There’s no one person I can really answer this question with. I can listen to any artist in any genre from Marvin Gaye, Jimmy Cliff, to Jay –Z , or even a spoken word performer for that matter and be influenced to make my own music. It’s pretty simple I’m influenced by good music, be it a catchy tune, soulful, or lyrical. With that being said If I had to choose an artist that really influenced me to do what I do it would be KRS-One.  I really like everything about his music. He always told a story and all of his content was lyrical and clever.

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: How would you describe your music to people?

JAY BLACK:  My music is versatile, hip-hop with a Jay Black Spin.  I like to say it’s music for the moment. There are so many moments when you’re happy, mad, sad excited, feeling some type of way. I like to capture those moments with my music in a way my fans can relate to.

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: Tell us about one of the hardest challenges you had to face in your music career and how did you overcome?

JAY BLACK:  I would say the hardest challenge for me would be engineering and producing my own tracks. When I was first getting started I did everything on my own, and I had to teach myself how to use equipment and software. This definitely took a lot of my time, but I feel it was well worth it and will help a lot in the long run.
