IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What city and state are you from?

ANDRE’ LAUREN: Wilmington, North Carolina. Better known as The Port City.

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What is your music background?

ANDRE’ LAUREN: I was raised in the church and grew up singing in the choir. At the time, my mother was a gospel recording artist in search of a deal. I guess you can say some of what she had rubbed off on me except I was a huge hip-hop head. I was hooked by the west coast music and sound. I would always imagine myself being in sunny California, in a video, riding with whoever I was listening to from the west coast. I believe I was 15 when I wrote my first
verse and since then I never looked back. I originally began writing just to relieve stress and get things off my chest. Soon the hobby grew into a passion. I found it amusing to sit down and write a rhyme and spit it over a beat. The way it flowed together was intriguing so I practiced all day every day to get better with putting my words together. My friends and I would enter small talent competitions at school or freestyle with each other during lunch. I loved the feeling of having someone tell me they could relate to what I was saying and the way I pieced it together, that’s why I’m doing the music I’m doing today.

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: Why do you want to record and release your own music?

ANDRE’ LAUREN: Just like anyone else with a voice, I want to be heard. As an artist, I feel like I have exactly what people need to hear, especially my generation. I’m a 90’s baby, so I grew up with good music. Unfortunately, that era’s gone and hip-hop is not hip-hop anymore. What I have is exactly what’s missing; hip-hop. This generation should know how much joy real hip-hop brings.

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What are your songs about?
ANDRE’ LAUREN: My songs are about life, the everyday struggle of an average kid from a tough city who’s trying to make a way for himself and his family. I capture the emotion of balancing college life and the life I’m trying to live as a musical figure. Honesty is in my music. I can’t talk about having fancy cars, big houses and money to throw around if I’ve never had it. I can sure talk about chasing the dream though.

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: Who is your fan base directed towards?
ANDRE’ LAUREN: My fan base is directed towards the ones like me, my generation. The hip-hop lovers that are in the same position I’m in will most definitely feel what I’m speaking on behind the mic. The younger generation will catch the wave too. They’ll have my blueprint on what to expect as they grow older and how to conquer all that comes against them. The older generation will feel me too cause they’ve been there, done that.

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: Who are your musical influences?
ANDRE’ LAUREN: Man, my musical influences vary. I’m an old soul, so cats like Smokey Robinson, The Temptations, Al Green and The Isley Brothers have a big influence on my music. I love samples from these legends. When I first started writing I was greatly influenced by 50 Cent and Kanye West, they were just great lyricist and entertainers. Today I would have to say my influences are Kendrick Lamar, J.Cole (shout out to the 910,) Big Krit, and Wale. Those cats are not much older than me and they speak with the wisdom that the culture needs. They made it from similar situations
of mine, doing exactly what I’m doing. That only motivates me and lets me know the job can be done.

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: How would you describe your music to people?
ANDRE’ LAUREN: I would tell the whole world the truth, the music is from the heart. It’s easier to be felt when it’s from the soul. My music is passionate and I can’t sugar coat anything that I say. If I wouldn’t say it off the mic, I’m not going to say it behind the mic.

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What makes you stand out from other artists?
ANDRE’ LAUREN: Versatility. A lot of artist will put out music and after a couple mix tapes, you become bored with it. On one mix tape, you will hear different styles of music and flows but not so much that it seems sloppy and cluttered. It’s a skill to have controlled versatility.

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What are some upcoming projects you are currently working on?
ANDRE’ LAUREN: I am currently working on my third mix tape and doing pre-production on a promo video before I record a video for the mix tape’s single. I have recently released a dope track with 40 Ali from Fayetteville, North Carolina called “You Know What” produced by Robbie Anthem. Go check it out!

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What are your career goals? Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
ANDRE’ LAUREN: In 10 years I see myself living comfortable off my music. With hard work and dedication, I can reach the goal of having an independent label in the making. By this time I’ll be well out of school and incorporating my
degree in with my plans of owning my own studio for film and music.

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: How can your fans access your music and contact you?
ANDRE’ LAUREN: I can be found on Twitter @AndreLauren_910 and you can check out the music at www.revebnation.com/AndreLauren

  20. Awesome man is my comment to you. Your talent will make room for you. Keep spitting those positive lyrics man. Real music from a real man whose experienced in the scribes he write .

  21. Music is chill it actually has the feel of the west coast artist you named but with a twist. hmmm maybe a new school Waren G. style that laid back vibe. I also appreciate you have something to say in your music. Im an aspiring artist but in singing neosoul prefer so i understand the struggle but glad new school artist like you still making it and showing HOPE for those to come in your footsteps.

  22. There’s a sense of honesty in these answers and I believe it rolls over well in your music. Versatility is key and honesty is the beholder. I feel as though typical rap artists try to fit in a box they’ve created based off of their personal idols. You, my friend, clearly have plenty of idols and high expectations for yourself. I pray for great success in your endeavors.
