IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What city and state are you from?
CARLA WINSTON: I am from Evansville, Indiana. Currently living in Atlanta, Georgia (Smyrna, GA. area).
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What is your music background?
CARLA WINSTON: I am Co-founder and Manager of Close Custody Entertainment. A music label in which I promote the careers of our artists and oversee all business affairs. I am responsible for the copyright and PRO registration of music created by our artists, negotiating contracts, placement of music and outsourcing to other organizations while mass producing a variety of products.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What makes a client attractive to you for management?
CARLA WINSTON: Clients are attracted by my work ethics and the way that I carry myself. I am constantly networking and marketing our business, passing out CD’s and business cards and looking for future ventures that are suitable to our mission. However the artists on our label may network with others, potentially expanding business.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: How do you go about client selection?
CARLA WINSTON: Presentation is the key to everything. We don’t do business with just anybody, we are careful about our selections to protect our brand. Their morals, values and ethics are very important to us. How passionate, motivated and inspired they are, their vision and work ethics are some of the things we consider. Most importantly when dealing with other artists, we search for those who have raw talent or a brand we feel is marketable.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: Who is your artists’ fan base directed towards?
CARLA WINSTON: Our primary demographic ranges from the ages of 16 and older, this includes male or female college students and adults that listen to Hip-Hop, R & B, Pop and mixed genres. Including those of all cultures, with interests in using social media platforms, partying, watching sports such as basketball, football, or baseball. Music productions, rapping/singing, dancing, urban artwork, pop culture and fashion.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: Who are your musical influences?
I was brought up in the era of watching “Soul Train”, so the late Don Cornelius would be my first musical TV host influence. I like music with meaning and substance that feeds the audience a life experience, music from the 70’s and 80’s era. Some of my musical influences are artists such as Marvin Gaye, Gladys Knight, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Ohio Players and Parliament Funkadelic. Years later on, music took a new twist with an old school feel, then there were different artists that I tuned to like Cameo, Charlie Wilson, Roger Troutman & Zapp, Snoop Dogg, New Edition and Will Downing. There are other various artists as well, some of them were one hit wonders. It just depends on the music that’s going on in that era.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: How would you describe your artists’ music to people?
CARLA WINSTON: Each of my artists have their own unique talent(s) of how they flow with their lyrics that instantly draws your attention to what’s being said in the song and the meaning behind it. There’s a song for everything that goes on in life, whether you’re falling in love, going through a break up, indifferent situations or just having fun. With every generation of young or old, music soothes the savage beast at every level of good, bad or indifferent situations in life. Each of my artists’ are gifted with a music element that captures the Hip-Hop, R & B, Pop and mixed genres.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What makes your artists stand out from other artists?
CARLA WINSTON: What makes my artists stand out from other artists is that, each one of them are uniquely talented on different levels of music, as far as their lyrical thesis and genre mix. At this time I’m managing five different artists. Of the five artists, two of them are producers and engineers, presenting multiple abilities to capture just about any audience through their life story lyrics. Their talents are a mixed combination coming from the down South of Louisiana, Texas, Florida, and little Mid-West fire, with a little Cali flare that has a flavor of mixing the ole school touch in a new generation. It’s like having gumbo, they make their music hot!
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What are some of the upcoming projects that you are currently working on?
CARLA WINSTON: Currently we are working on a few single recording projects, since we usually do some type of compilation album. We are focusing on promoting the singles and when necessary we’ll pull the completed albums out. My producers are constantly making music and the artists are there to work on whatever beat that meets their lyrical swag.
Here in the next couple of weeks, we will be promoting and posting the new singles on YouTube, Reverbnation, Twitter and in digital stores.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What are your career goals?
CARLA WINSTON: My career goals are continuing to set and achieve obtainable goals that will help develop and further the careers of my artists as much as possible. This would include getting great song placement in movies, television, and radio, making the Top 20 on the music charts or even higher. Receive nominations for awards, getting articles published, as well as endorsements. These are all great goals but we mainly want to be comfortably successful. Success comes in different forms to everyone. Another goal of mine is to focus on building my artists’ fan base, incorporating local and out of state performances, pushing for radio play. Making my artists more commercial viable. Perhaps a distribution deal will come up in the future? However it plays out, I’m going to make the best of every situation that comes my way. There’s a learning experience in everything and these are just some of my goals.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
CARLA WINSTON: I’m a visionary idealist’s, with many talents. It’s kind of hard to say what I would be doing or seeing myself doing in 10 years. I don’t plan on being in the same position as a business person or in my personal life. With productive work, there comes growth. By staying consistent, I can see myself managing, developing and promoting artists and doing other things. I’m a people person. I get great satisfaction in helping someone create or develop their dreams to a reality. I love to create avenues that will help others succeed in some type of way. It’s about having the right network connections and resources, because anything is possible! My success is based off of making the best of every situation, until I make my mark to retire.
