Dane Kennedy is a Hip Hop and RnB music producer who operates under DNK Muzic. Born and raised in the Mississippi Delta, Dane always had a love for hiphop and R&B; however, the love for crafting and creating music began when his grandfather bought him a piano. He was blessed with the gift of what the old folks refer to as, “playing by ear”. That gift was further developed when his parents forced him to take piano lessons.Even though he hated it at times; in hindsight, it was a blessing. He later convinced his parents to buy him a set of Technic 1200s…and the rest was history.
Producers such as Dr. Dre, Timbaland, Just Blaze, Mannie Fresh, Beats by the Pound, and others have had a strong influence on Dane’s music. Focused on fresh and original ideas,Dane has remained true to his values, core beliefs, and music. Holding steadfast to such principles, he believes his music will eventually be embraced on a national stage. He has worked with numerous independent artists in both Hip Hop and RnB genres and steadily feeds A&Rs and other music industry insider tracks for placements with major artists. In 2014, Dane decided to break from the norm of providing music/beats to vocal artists and started getting those same artists to provide him with vocals to his music/beats. This led to the release of his first single, “C’mon Don’t Stop” ft. P.A.T., which hit all digital stores on August 4.
Dane plans to release threemore tracks under DNK Muzic before the year is out in addition to providing music production for various projects associated with other artists. In 2015, you can expect a full album under DNK Muzic featuring Dane Kennedy and other affiliates of DNK Muzic. Stay Tuned!!
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What city and state are you from?
DNK MUZIC: Belzoni, MS (Mississippi)
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What is your music background?
DNK MUZIC: My grandfather bought me a piano when I was small. Like a real “grown folks” piano. I was blessed with what the old people refer to as the gift of “playing by ear”. My parents then forced me to take piano lessons (which I hated at the time), which I really appreciate now. I later convinced them to get me a set of Technics 1200s and began deejaying. Like most producers, that natural gift of music combined with the deejaying automatically propels you in the direction of music production.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What are your songs about?
DNK MUZIC: Depends on the genre. I mostly do Hip Hop and R&B, every now and then a little POP. Since I’m a producer, the ending result of a song lies more with the vocal artist performing unless it is something we are collaborating on with a specific idea.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What is your favorite song to perform and why?
DNK MUZIC: As I said I produce. It’s not uncommon for me to do a hook on a track. Surprisingly enough, I can sing just a little and I can rap. I’m not that fond of my voice; although, I hear most hip hop artists aren’t fond of their voices. With that being said, I have actually recorded some tracks as producer and artist, and I’m set to release my very first performance track in September, titled “Two Sides – Trap Lord/Rap God”. It’s actually my favorite song because of the complexity of the message behind it. I’m hoping that it will be embraced and more importantly the message behind the song is understood.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What has surprised you the most in the pursuit of a career in music?
DNK MUZIC: There isn’t an industry out there where everyone can be trusted. With that being said, what has surprised me the most are the number of people dying to be in the industry, yet afraid to take certain risk and reluctant to invest in themselves. I’m not surprised that success doesn’t come over night. I’m not surprised that it takes time and hard work. I’m not surprised that there are set backs and restarts. One can expect that in any field they are trying to be successful at.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: Who are your musical influences?
DNK MUZIC: Dr. Dre, Beats by the Pound (remember them…No Limit), Kanye, Timbaland, Just Blaze
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: How would you describe your music to people?
DNK MUZIC: Ha, I’d describe it as unique and different. Now, I understand every artist probably thinks that way as well. That’s a difficult question to answer for me. I don’t go into a track with any particular plan…it just develops very organically and takes on a form of its own.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What makes you stand out from other artists?
DNK MUZIC: I’d like to think it’s my sound. I mean, it doesn’t sound like trap music, it’s not really that dirty south sound, nor that New York sound, which by the way I love all of those sounds. I guess I consider it to be my own sound. I heard Mike Will doing an interview and they asked him about his new sound and how it is taking over. His answer was, “That’s always been my sound, it just never had a platform. Now that it does, people think it’s a new sound” One of the pieces of advice he gave was to remain true to your sound, the world will find it.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What would you like to see changed in today’s music industry?
DNK MUZIC: I’d like to see more of a platform created for independent artist. Too much of the industry or ones access to it and success is determined by who you may know or who can afford to pay. I will say this, It is changing though. The emergence of independent labels, the internet, social media outlets. Artists now have an avenue to promote their craft and make a boat load of money completely independent of the majors. So it is definitely changing.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What are some upcoming projects that you are currently working on?
DNK MUZIC: I have the release of the “Two Sides” single coming up in September featuring Yours Truly. I just released a single on August 4, “C’mon Don’t Stop” ft. P.A.T. (available in all digital stores) and it’s doing well. I’ll also release two more singles by the end of the year and you can expect a DNK Muzic album in 2015. I’ll also continue to produce tracks for other independent artist and if I’m lucky, a major artist too.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What are your career goals? Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
DNK MUZIC: Career Goals? Continue to make music and reach the point where my music is heard on a national stage. I’d also like to develop DNK Muzic into an independent label.
Where do I see myself in 10 years? Hopefully 5 years removed from having won a Grammy (lol). In 10 years I see myself having achieved national attention with my music, I see DNK Muzic developing into a one stop shop for up and coming artist. We handle your production, your marketing and promotion, brand development, artist development, your touring, etc. I’m actually putting that foundation in place now.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: How can your fans access your music and contact you?
