IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What city and state are you from?
DAVY ANNA JONES: Raleigh, NC
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What is your musical background?
DAVY ANNA JONES: I played acoustic guitar for 7 years before discovering my talent for rapping and I haven’t picked up my guitar since.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: Why do you want to record and release your own music?
DAVY ANNA JONES: I have a story to tell and I want to share it. I think that there are many people in the world that can relate to my experiences. I have always been told that I am well spoken, intelligent, articulate and those gifts can be used to touch people. Even if it’s just to make a 3 minute song that soothes a heartache.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What are your songs about?
DAVY ANNA JONES: I write songs about redemption. Whether it be uplifting, bubbly, angry, or sexy the underlying message is always that I’m just a man who’s soul is drawn to heaven. My music is a running diary, I don’t always know how to express myself when dealing with my emotions. So I write it all down, compose instrumentals that speak to the essence of my feelings and record it in an intimate setting.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: Who are your musical influences?
DAVY ANNA JONES: Drake… He’s the greatest artist of my generation and I don’t take that for granted, he’s our Michael Jackson. His music is the theme to my youth. I also draw great inspiration from Aaliyah and Sade. The elemental qualities of their music is unmatched (Jhene Aiko is close), it truly speaks to your soul. For instance, every time I hear “Kiss of Life” I feel like I’ve been reborn. That’s the feeling that I want to give people.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: How would you describe your music to people?
DAVY ANNA JONES: “I am a black new wave artist.” I’m taking hip hop to a place that people said it couldn’t go. It’s a mix of R&B, Neo Soul, & Rap, with a hint of Electronic all mashed into one beautiful blend. Before I was afraid that if I went to a place that deep that people wouldn’t respond. When I heard Yeezus I knew that I could do anything, that it was ok to be myself.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What makes you stand out from other artists?
DAVY ANNA JONES: I am very aware of my own consciousness and I believe that it makes me more transparent than the average person. You can feel that type of reality in the music. Plus I’m driven, I’m the child of entrepreneurs that came from nothing. I watched my mother work her ass off for 25 years. She raised 2 kids, went to college, and ran her own business without the help of a man. That’s not easy for a black woman to do in the south, especially when you come from poverty. If she can do that, there’s no reason that I can’t do this.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: Tell us about one of the hardest challenges you had to face in your music career and how did you overcome?
DAVY ANNA JONES: My biggest challenge has been finding myself. Being comfortable in my own skin, with my own voice, trusting my instincts. Becoming the artist that I always meant to be. Now that I know who I am as a person and I’m not trying to be who other people want or expect me to be, I’m ready to take the next step.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What are some upcoming projects you are currently working on?
DAVY ANNA JONES: I released “Labor of Love” on October 16, 2014. Which chronicles the past 3 years of my life. The record is very personal, all true stories. Very difficult to write, even harder to record. You can hear the heart break in my voice, I love it. I’m working on two joint ventures that are currently untitled one with Jonae Mims and the other with DJ Paradime. My next solo project D.A.V.E. (Designer Artist Virtuoso Entertainer) will be an introduction to Black New Wave and very much a rebirth for me.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What are your career goals? Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
DAVY ANNA JONES: In ten years I will be in transition… I’ll be 35, hopefully a father, wiser, more well rounded. Producing for other artist, touring, creating graphics, & painting. I really want to own an entertainment venue, a place where up and coming artist can get some exposure. I guess that’s my fall back plan. I know I can’t rap forever, there’s only one Jay-Z.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: How can your fans access your music and contact you?
DAVY ANNA JONES: I’m all over the Internet. You can find me on every social media platform @DavyAnnaJones also my personal website www.DavyAnna.com and if all else fails Google me.
