Alley C.B. Flynn a.k.a Dark Planet is a Canadian multi-instrumentalist, producer, lyricist, filmmaker and founder of The Dark Planet Collective, a group that has quickly risen through the ranks of the East Coast Canadian independent hip-hop scene.
In May 2014, the Dark Planet Collective released their first video and single, titled “Stand Up.” In October, they released a follow-up video titled “P.U.S.H.” (Perseverance, Unite, Sacrifice, Hustle). Since that time, both videos have received much praise, acclaim, and attention. P.U.S.H alone having been played and shared tens of thousands of times, solidifying the group as a pillar of the East Coast indie hip-hop community.
Flynn takes the lead on producing, recording, filming, editing, and creating all artwork through his company MadRock Film & Audio. MadRock Film & Audio is an independent production studio based in Scenic Bay, Newfoundland. It specializes in creating commercials, music videos, and other promotional content for businesses, bands, and artists, including photography, graphic design, logo creation, web development, online marketing, and more. To learn more about MadRock, visit www.MadRocks.ca.
Additionally, Flynn also owns, manages, and runs www.TheBoomBoxx.com, an independent music, video, news, and promotional company dedicated to highlighting the very active and quickly growing Newfoundland hip-hop community.
Flynn is a 2008 graduate of the Selkirk Music College in British Columbia, where he studied orchestration, MIDI programming, and music production.
In 2007 he also received his diploma in Music Industry and Performance from CNA, after two years of engrossing himself in recording arts, music history and culture, business, artist management, promotions, and much more.
When he’s not trying to create his next big video or single, Flynn enjoys spending his time directing music videos and comedy sketches, doing photo shoots, sleeping or just playing with his dog. Flynn says his life goals are simple: to make artistic creations that he can be proud of and that will hopefully inspire other people in the process.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What city and state are you from?
DARK PLANET COLLECTIVE: I am originally from the city of Corner Brook, Newfoundland. I am currently residing in St. John’s, which is the capital and largest city in Newfoundland and also the oldest English-founded city in North America.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What is your music background?
DARK PLANET COLLECTIVE: I have been performing, recording, and writing since I was a child and have been surrounded by artists and musicians my entire life. I am a singer/songwriter, MC, producer, and multi-instrumentalist who’s played in a variety of different bands throughout the years, ranging from punk rock to death metal, folk, hip hop, and everything in between. I studied music business, performance, and digital media in college. I currently work as a sound engineer, videographer, photographer, and editor at MadRock Film & Audio, while also running www.TheBoomBoxx.com, an independent music, video, and news site representing our local hip hop scene.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: Why do you want to record and release your own music?
DARK PLANET COLLECTIVE: I conjure, create, record, and release music and videos simply so that I’ll have something that I can be proud of, something to smile about and remember when I’m a crazy, old, feeble man looking back at it all. It’s also my main source for gaining strength, helping me heal myself, and giving closure to different aspects and obstacles in my life. I hope that in some small way it helps comfort, motivate, or inspire someone else to do the same. I love getting down and funky with my bad self! Who doesn’t, right?
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What are your songs about?
DARK PLANET COLLECTIVE: When not flossing on cats (sarcasm), my songs are about my life, the human condition, and the trials, tribulations, and struggles we all go through to become the people we want to be, as opposed to the people were forced to be. I hope it all comes across as honest, positive, fun, and all about staying true to yourself. Yes, it sounds cliché, but it’s true. Ya dingus. For your health!
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: Who are your musical influences?
DARK PLANET COLLECTIVE: My biggest influences would have to be Rage Against The Machine, Public Enemy, Beastie Boys, Camu Tao, Breezly Brewin, Cage, Yak Ballz, Aesop Rock, Eyedea, Atmosphere, Wu-Tang Clan, Slayer, Megadeth, Death, Bad Religion, NOFX, DK, Nirvana, Bob Dylan, Nick Drake, Queen, Don Ross, Blind Melon, and The Meters.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: How would you describe your music to people?
DARK PLANET COLLECTIVE: 90s Fresh! It’s kinda like throwing a tape in the deck of your yellow Sony Walkman, jumping on your Dominion board, bombing down the street on a beautiful sunny day, while rocking your neon-green shades and pink shorts, giving everyone high fives, and exclaiming how “rad” everything is. But mainly it’s music to persevere, unite, sacrifice, and hustle to.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What makes you stand out from other artists?
DARK PLANET COLLECTIVE: Besides being the realest, baddest mofo you have ever cast your eyes and ears upon (more sarcasm), I create everything you see and hear from the ground up myself. I write, produce, perform, and record all my own music, and then I film, direct, edit and produce all my own content and music videos. I also design the artwork, website, logos and posters and take care of everything online social media related for the D.P.C. So, there’s a cohesive style to everything Dark Planet. And on top of all that, I’m an honest dude who truly does it all for the music. What you see is what you get.… Just make sure to look closely, or you might miss the details.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: Tell us about one of the hardest challenges you had to face in your music career, and how did you overcome it?
DARK PLANET COLLECTIVE: Besides my upbringing, which was pretty darkly comedic and mad wild to say the least, I would say the hardest obstacles I had to overcome was finding the courage to actually put myself out there for anybody and everybody to see. Putting myself out there to be judged and to become OK with the idea of it all, as I am very much a lone wolf who enjoys my peace and privacy.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What are some upcoming projects you are currently working on?
DARK PLANET COLLECTIVE: Currently, I am working on completing the first 2 D.P.C albums, titled “Blue Wolf Chronicles” and “Gridlock Galaxies” with fellow D.P.C. member Glowbrains, while also filming new music videos and releasing singles regularly. There is also a follow-up album in the works from my Folk band XELA & The U.F.O Acid Godz. Dat name, right?
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What are your career goals? Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
DARK PLANET COLLECTIVE: My career goals are to create a career which pays me to do exactly what I love to do, create art, make music, film videos, and enjoy my life to the fullest before I wake up from this wild dream. In 10 years, I expect to be making a modest living off my company, MadRock Film & Audio, while releasing albums, touring, and having a relatively healthy and successful musical career. I would also like to open a sub division of MadRock as an independent record label to help promote, produce and distribute other artists in whatever spare time I have left over.
