There’s no better way to put it than to call Canadian indie artist Sherlana an entertainer. In just the last few years, she has hosted the successful cable series Music Flava TV – which included interviewing the likes of P. Diddy, Simple Plan, and Doug E. Fresh – created a stir internationally with her latest single “Party” which spiked at number 55 on Beatport Top 100 Downloads, and she is an avid Sickle Cell and Thalassemia advocate, using her voice and her stature to bring global awareness to this disease.
Raised in a musical family, Sherlana began to explore her own artistic roots at the age of 12, singing and performing beside her father, who was also a noted musician. By 2011, Sherlana’s music was being recognized throughout Canada, the U.S, and across seas within Europe.
Now with Italian Label DavidDance Records supporting her efforts, Sherlana is ready to break down industry doors with her unique brand of lyrically infectious melodies and captivating hooks.
Talent may be easy to find, but a blend of motivation and charisma combined with a unique musical perspective is rare. Without a doubt, Sherlana has it all!
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What city and state/province are you from?
SHERLANA: I grew up and attended school in the vicinity of Lawrence Park; a neighborhood in Toronto, Ontario near Forest Hill where fellow Canadian Artist Drake also spent his childhood years.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What is your music background?
SHERLANA: I was extremely shy growing up and music became my best friend as I immersed myself in every genre, thoroughly enjoying the lyrical journey. At times, I’d create my own unique version for the fun of it! Looking back, it was a hidden sign of my blossoming songwriting abilities. I became a member of the choir in grade school and recalled the conductor would periodically point out my distinct voice during rehearsals…Oh Geez, I’d instantly get butterflies in my stomach… It was around this period in my life that I discovered I had a natural gift.
Around the age of 12, I got my first official taste of the stage with the opportunity to perform as a back-up singer during a concert series featuring the likes of Beenie Man in a stadium full of screaming fans. I was so nervous, my body was shaking but I was determined to experience the opportunity. My nerves melted as I graced the stage, the lights were so warm and inviting, I could barely see just how many people were in the audience. Thank GOD! I’m sure I would’ve fainted. Needless to say, the rest was history!
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: Why do you want to record and release your own music?
SHERLANA: When the world says, Give up, Hope whispers: Try it one more time, you alone control your own destiny. Similar to the artists I grew up listening to that truly inspired me to pursue my dream no matter how seemingly out of reach it may have been at the time, I’d like to inspire the next generation of musicians in a similar manner. Music is a universal language and to use it as a tool to empower and enrich generations is a timeless gift. This is what continuously motivates me to record and release quality music.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What are your songs about?
SHERLANA: My songs are inspired by everyday life. Each song is melody driven and has its own personality depending on the story I am conveying at that specific time.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: Who are your musical influences?
SHERLANA: I have too many to list but off the top of my head I’d say: Nat King Cole, Nina Simone, Elton John, Michael Bolton, Tina Turner, Pointer Sisters and Prozzäk.
They inspire me because the music they create is timeless and over the decades has inspired generations without necessarily knowing it’s true origin. It takes a special type of artist to achieve this status. I recognize this is no easy task but I have a dream that one day I’ll go down in history and my music will continue to inspire generations for years to come!
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: How would you describe your music to people?
SHERLANA: My music is uplifting and addictive. My brand of lyrically infectious melodies and captivating hooks will leave you wanting more each time. As a singer/songwriter I am versatile and I work in a broad range of styles including Pop, R&B and EDM (Electronic Dance Music).
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What makes you stand out from other artists?
SHERLANA: I stand out from the rest because I have the ability to naturally manipulate my voice to the song instead of manipulating the song to my voice LOL if that makes sense…Vocally I am versatile and each song distinctively has it’s own unique feel and sound. Let’s just say my songs have personality!
My vocals are a brand in its own right and has afforded me the opportunity to market and sell my Acappellas as a standalone DJ Tool, allowing DJs around the world the chance to download and create their own unique remixes of my songs.
For example: Party (Vocals) was listed as Beatports Must Hear Acappellas. It was subsequently remixed by several renowned DJs including Australian DJ Steve Frank on the mix “Crank This Mother Pt. 1” which charted number 24 out of 100 Top Mixes on Beatport.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: Tell us about one of the hardest challenges you had to face in your music career and how did you overcome?
SHERLANA: Early in my career, I worked with a close friend and producer on a track I wrote that had potential to go places. We did a beta test and released the track in specific markets to solicit feedback for the official release. Unfortunately, the majority of fans surveyed felt the production value did not do justice to the vocals. I was forced to make a career changing decision and cut ties midway through the production of our next track together. Inadvertently, the best thing that happened to me but an extremely difficult decision none the less. At the end of the day, My motto is quality over quantity and I chose to stand firm in my beliefs. I used the power of decision to take control of a potentially detrimental blow to my career and I have never looked back!
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What are some upcoming projects you are currently working on?
SHERLANA: I am heading to Metalworks studio this month to record several tracks for a collaboration with DJ Ben Dover in Italy. The tracks will be released by DavidDance Records. There is also an album in the works! In addition, I am updating my catalog to submit my songs to a few music publishing companies that are interested in licensing my music in TV and Film.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What are your career goals? Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
SHERLANA: My career goals are endless. My primary goal is to continue to perfect my talent and craft and reach a point in my career whereby I may help nurture indie artists to achieve their dreams regardless of the perceived obstacles in their path.
In 10 years, I see myself on the Forbes list with a few platinum hits under my belt doing what I love to do!
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: How can fans access your music and contact you?
SHERLANA: My music can be downloaded worldwide on iTunes, Beatport and most digital retailers depending on your country of origin.
Fans can get at me on Twitter, Facebook and Reverbnation. Before I go I would like to say…From the bottom of my heart, I truly appreciate the continued loyal support of my fans, friends, family.
Shout out to my hair, make-up and clothing sponsors over the years. Special Thanks to Northbridge Media Group and my Italian family DavidDance Records.
And I can’t forget a big thank you to Industry All Access for taking the time to chat with me!
