Born Gabriel Herrera in May of 1985 in Albuquerque NM, he was given the stage name of “Lumpz One!” by a friend in early high school as a joke. The “!” in his name is a remembrance of a close friend who passed a few years ago. He describes his music as Psychedelic Latin Hip Hop music has been growing a steady buzz in throughout the southwest.
His mission is to spread positive vibes, write lyrics that provoke thought, encourage learning, and move his listeners and fans spiritually through great music. With his candid vulnerability and smooth lyrical flow, Lumpz One! is certified next to blow.

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What city and state are you from?

LUMPZ ONE!: I am from Albuquerque, New Mexico. I have lived in Bakersfeild, CA and Tucson, Arizona as well.

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What is your music background?

LUMPZ ONE!: I was brought up in a very musically inclined family that encouraged celebrating creativity, and was always being introduced to lots of Hip Hop from older family members. The first time I heard “Jam On It” by Newcleus, I knew I loved Hip Hop. Even though that song was made years before I was born, I always appreciated the stories in older Hip Hop. I started freestyling in school at a young age, and ever since then could not stop writing rhymes. I had trouble finding beats, and that’s what inspired me to be self-produced. I learned how to sound engineer from my friend Q! (RIP), and once he passed, I vowed to be the only one who works on my music. I’ve self produced (beats, lyrics, engineering, mixing, & mastering) multiple albums & EP’s, and I have much more music to make.

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: Why do you want to record and release your own music?

LUMPZ ONE!: This is always a very difficult question to answer. It’s a complex question that deserves an answer with the same complexities. When I started, it was curiosity, amusement, and a way to get that bad energy out. Before music, my temper was ridiculous. Even for a large part of my career, it held me back, but through the soul searching done through music, I realized making music is what keeps me out of trouble. I also have become addicted to being in the studio. I came up in the time right before home studios being on every block. You had to know someone to get in to the studio, or you had to pay $100 an hour at the local commercial studios that have engineers that don’t care about your music. After 10 years of building my studio, I finally have full control, and now produce music cleaner than most of the big studios. All in all, after being on stage and seeing people listening to my words, I just can’t stop. I have a 15 year long career locally, and lots of my fans here at home require someone to give them that music that has more than just beats & rhymes. I also test myself through music by seeing what new things I can create, discover things about myself, this world, and my community by observing things differently in my studio. To me, music is life.

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What are your songs about?

LUMPZ ONE!: My songs are all different from one another. I make songs about life, what I am going through, situations I’m plagued by, problems I have with authority, smoking weed, opinions on life, philosophy, science, consciousness, dreams, the desert, where I’m from, songs for my family, uplifting songs, sad songs (lots of sad songs in the past), and lately a lot more theme based story telling. Most of my songs are parts of albums/EP’s that tell an entire story from beginning to end, and they are all connected to each other through the story I’m trying to tell.

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: Who is your fan base directed towards?

LUMPZ ONE!: My fan base right now consists of the avid underground Hip Hop heads who prefer strong content, intricate styles/wordplay, and originality in production. Breaking it down a bit: The college student who attends his local Hip Hop weekly spot, b-boys and b-girls, high school students into video games, and the urban science fiction/comic book fan.

Who I would like to reach? More people that want something new that actually is different than everyone else. People are tired of being told who to like, and what to play. they want some new music.

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: Who are your musical influences?

LUMPZ ONE!: Temptations, Santana, War, Parliament Funkadelic, Steve Miller Band, Grover Washington Jr, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, Lewis Armstrong, Billy Holiday, Nina Simon, Aretha Franklin, Sam Cooke, Screaming Jay Hawkins, Jose Feliciano, Steely Dan, Boston, Journey, Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, Debussey, Vivaldi, Newcleus, Sugar Hill Gang, Ice T, Ice Cube, NWA, Dr. Dre, Eminem, Naughty by Nature, Redman, Wu Tang (entire clan to save space), Melly Mel, Jurassic 5, Ozo Matli, Buena Vista Social Club, Tech N9ne, Common, Dub C, Ceebo, Poor Righteous Teachers, Muddy Waters, BB King, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Cypress Hill, Outkast, Pharaoh Monch, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Robert Cray Band, The Roots, Jimi Hendrix, The Fugees, Devin The Dude, K Rino, Pharcyde, UGK, Geto Boys, Jedi Mind Tricks, Dj Quik, and so many more.

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: How would you describe your music to people?

LUMPZ ONE!: I make music that means something. Meaning I put my heart & soul into the songs I make. It has a funky, yet almost dark sound. I change the styles on every song, and do not rely on technology to make me sound good. Some songs are jazzy, some are grimy, some are funky, some are bluesy, some are symphonic, some are fast, some slow. There’s at least one song for anyone in my collection.

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What makes you stand out from other artists?

LUMPZ ONE!: My work ethic alone stands out from most other artist. I work a full time day job, and run my music business. My music business tasks include: making music (All aspects like producing, writing, recording, mixing, mastering, etc), website development and maintenance, photography, video editing, graphic design, promotion, marketing, networking, research, planning, performing, managing, collecting, sales (digital and show merchandise), inventory control. I also do some digital distribution (I normally use CDbay.com for mine) and logistics. My music stands even more. I have a style that is unheard of, my music is fresh, my ideas are creative, my delivery is strong, my performance is incredible, my crowd control is superb, I can interact with people at my shows, and host events better than anyone I know.

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What are some upcoming projects you are currently working on?

LUMPZ ONE!: I just released a free EP called “The After Work Sessions”, and with out sending it out on tons of email blasts, it’s done all right so far. I released it on New Year’s Eve, and I’m sure once I start sending it out more it’ll do much better. I also have an album called, “Mood Swinging: Memoirs of a Stoned Mad Man” coming out sometime this year. I have not yet selected a release date, because I am still getting the cover work finished to perfection. I just finished an EP last week that will be coming out in March called, “Death Before Neon Lights”, and that one will be given out for free. I will also be working on some more projects as I made a bet with myself that I can produce 7 QUALITY projects in 2015. Three down, four more to come!

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What are your career goals? Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

LUMPZ ONE!: I want to do international tours, make movie scores, have my songs in video games, movies, cartoons, and commercials. 10 years from now I would like to have toured the globe 7 times, been the main man on the score for 25+ feature length films, be featured in at least 100 video games, and be recognized as the first truly independent musician to obtain these things as a solo artist. And most importantly, given millions of people all over the world a great performance.

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: How can your fans access your music and contact you?

LUMPZ ONE!: I am the easiest artist to contact directly. I have no filters between myself and fans. I will list some links below of where to find me and some of my music.

  1. Lumpz 1 is an MC with incredible heart! He’s outlasted so many in the local game without confining himself with the “local” status. Hes got mad love for Burque though and he’s the first one to jump when it comes to benefitting the community. MUCH LOVE, LUMPZ1!!!

  2. Lumpzone! Is the dopest lyricist in the southwest..if you ain’t heard of him, then you must have been under a rock! He puts his heart and soul in every show and track. I highly encourage anyone who hasn’t heard Lumpzone jam, to check it out NOW!

  3. Lumps 1 was one humble dude, besides being a dope emcee from the Duke City. I see him as the type to give back to his community if he made it and not just brag about his status in the game as many are only in it for. Respect to a true vet!

  4. You won’t find another artist in the Southwest as genuine as Lumpz One: not only in his lyrics, but in his personality and professionalism too. The Lumpz One experience shows you that, with more than a few sleepless nights, some elbow grease, and maybe a blunt (of roaches) or two, true organic hip hop isn’t dead.

  5. Lumpz One drops the classic Thumpers say single time. He’s been killin the game since 15. One day the world will know his name

  6. Lumpz One is very dedicated to making music and does his thang. His music I’d different and look forward to hearing anything new he comes out with
