Nova aka Jaystack “The Messenger” was born Jermaine Andre Barrett February 19, 1984 in Highlands Hospital in East Oakland, CA. Nova is an artist who considers himself to have the best of both worlds having the opportunity to live in the suburbs of Foster City, California and grow and become a man in Long Beach, California. Each home molded Nova and gave him positive-diverse attributes that he continues to implement in his life and on his daily journey as a musician while trying to of reach his nirvana. In his music, Nova makes it quite clear his reason for wanting to enter the music industry.

Feeling that the industry is already plagued with enough artists talking about their possessions, Nova decided to stay true to himself. Nova understands that valuables can always be updated. At one point he says Cash Money came out with the trend of having twenty inch rims, years later it was 24s. In the 80′s it was gold donkey ropes, now it’s about platinum jewelry. “Point being, emotions, feelings, and real life situations create classics. That is why people can listen to a Tupac Shakur album until this day,” Nova states.

In January, Nova released a mixtape titled “Long OverDue” and can be downloaded on Datpiff.com. He is slated to release “The Foundation” before the end of March

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What city and state are you from?

NOVA AKA JAYSTACK THE MESSENGER:  I was originally born in Highlands Hospital in Oakland CA. I am a currently resident of San Mateo CA.

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What is your music background?

NOVA AKA JAYSTACK THE MESSENGER: When it comes to my background in music, I began writing at 12 years old and began recording at 18. I’ve been performing for the last 10 years up and down California from all over the Bay Area to LA and Hollywood. On my musical journey in 2008 I had the pleasure of working and recording records with artist such as Lil Kim on my song “Set it Off” and R&B Singer Ray J on a record I have titled “State to State.” Along with writing, I’ve had my share of rap battles on different platforms as well.

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: Why do you want to record and release your own music?

NOVA AKA JAYSTACK THE MESSENGER:  My major reason for wanting to record and release music starts a little before. Writing is therapy; it allows me to deal with the different emotions and situations that arise. Sometimes good, some times bad. When it comes to releasing the music, the motivation behind that is to help those who go through those same situations. I would not be honest if I did not say that financial gain is also a factor in putting out my music as well, a big factor. I also record and release music because the culture of hip-hop needs it. Hip-hop needs it to keep that balance of real rap.

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What are your songs about?

NOVA AKA JAYSTACK THE MESSENGER: My music can’t be defined or categorized in one box. So when it comes to depth and meaning of my music, there are many. In my records the listeners will get my joy and pain. The listener will get my true feelings. Sometimes I feel like taking the listeners to club or sometimes to school. Other times I want to get fly and talk to the ladies. You know I talk about real life situations.

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: Who is your fan base directed towards?

NOVA AKA JAYSTACK THE MESSENGER: My target fan base would include the age demographics of 12-40 hip-hop/pop/R&B listeners. Due to the fact that this is a business at the end of the day 12-17 age range is a deeper focus because they are the key purchasers of music now days.

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: Who are your musical influences?

NOVA AKA JAYSTACK THE MESSENGER: When it comes to my musical influences from a hip-hop standpoint that would include Tupac Shakur, Nasir Jones, Jadakiss, and Jay Z. I can’t forget Scarface, E40, or Too Short. When it comes to music as a whole the greats will always be a huge influence, Marvin Gay, Al Green, Barry White, and Babyface. They have contributed to more than one genre of music, but have preserved musical culture as a whole with timeless records.

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: How would you describe your music to people?

NOVA AKA JAYSTACK THE MESSENGER: The best description I can give to a listener about my music is it’s and emotional roller coaster. Nothing is one sided. I consider the music I make to be marketable, and globally attractive. The sounds are inspired from multiple genres, pop, electronica, rock, soul, and jazz.

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What makes you stand out from other artists?

NOVA AKA JAYSTACK THE MESSENGER: What makes me stand out from other artist is my conceptual writing. Another attribute that I believe separates me from most artist is my lyrical capability and my work ethic.

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What are some upcoming projects you are currently working on?

NOVA AKA JAYSTACK THE MESSENGER: Some projects to be seen in the future that I am currently working on will include a mixtape titled “The Foundation” and Another One titled “Pole Music” I am also working on the Remix to my record with Lil Kim titled “Set it off”
