IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What city and state are you from?
ALKA RBN: I’m from Flint, Michigan. I was born and raised there. I currently live in Indianapolis.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What is your music background?
ALKA RBN: Well, it starts with my family. On my mom’s side of the family, all my relatives play something. My uncle was the lead singer of this group called DLAments. They also did a couple of shows with Ready For The World back in 1981. I had another uncle that was a songwriter, and did that for twenty years. I attended Lawrence Central High School. Freshman year through senior year I was involved with several extracurricular activities including talent shows, bands, and plays. I even played the trombone.
Why do you want to record and release your own music?
ALKA RBN: Music is in my bloodline. I love the creative and artistic side of art. Music is therapeutic to me. Plus I am tired of everything I’m hearing now. It seems like everybody wants to just talk about sex, cars, clothes, and females. I feel like people are forgetting about the struggle and where they came from. Music is losing meaning to me, and I want to bring that heartfelt music back.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What are your songs about?
ALKA RBN: My songs are about real life situations. Stress, work, and bills are the main topics for my music. I also love making songs about the economy and poverty. I just feel like in this day and age everybody is going through some type of struggle. I just want to be the voice of the people who have no hope and feel like it’s all over.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: Who is your fan base directed towards?
ALKA RBN: My fans are people in the struggle. Mainly that’s people that are working daily for everything, and it’s still not enough. So I feel that’s a little bit of everybody because I feel we are back in the depression.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: Who are your musical influences?
ALKA RBN: I have a few musical influences and the first person is Tupac. Well, Pac showed me that it doesn’t matter where you come from, you can still make it out a bad situation and overcome. The second person is Lil Boosie. I love Lil Boosie because he wasn’t scared to talk about things other people were scared to talk about. He took a risk by doing it. The last person is a newer artist and his name is Young Thug. Thugger to me has no boundaries whatsoever with his music. He shows me how far music can go, and that you don’t have to care about what everybody else is thinking.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: How would you describe your music to people?
ALKA RBN: Well my music is very gritty and straight to the point. My music gives you an ODB/Eminem type of feel. The reason why I say These Things is because I’m not scared to say what’s on my mind, and If it’s controversial like ODB/Eminem is, then so be it. Sometimes the best way is to be real, and it’s all in my music. I would also describe my music as inspirational because it can help people out of a bad situation and give them hope.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What makes you stand out from other artists?
ALKA RBN: First off what makes me stand out from other artists is my image and what my music conveys. My image is real. People see me as a real person going through the struggle and dealing with bills, the same way regular working people do. I want people to see and know that yea my momma is working two jobs supporting three kids and doing everything on her own, and that I’m just like them. That’s what I feel like makes me stand out from other artists. I’m not afraid to express the real.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What are some upcoming projects you are currently working on?
ALKA RBN: Well, I have several projects on the way. I already have my first official mixtape our right now, titled, “World Of Risk”. You can find that on Livemixtapes Indy. The second project I have on the way is “Struggamentals”, and that’s basically a mesh of all my other songs that didn’t make the official mixtape. The third project I have coming is with my producer in my city called the night. We are going for a EP with that one. The final project that I have on the way is “Stress, Work, And Bills”. That is coming to be my next official mixtape.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What are your career goals? Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
ALKA RBN: I have two types of career goals, my immediate goals and my long terms goals. In the next one to three years I would like to start getting more people in tuned with my sound and what I am trying to bring to the game. Secondly, I want to start opening up for more major artists and also network. Finally, I would like to start building a huge buzz in the city because I fell like that’s where you have to start first to really get going somewhere. My long term goals is to make RBN (Real By Nature) a household name. I want my brand to be worldwide, and also open a couple of fashion stores around the world. I also want to change the world with my music by showing the youth that you don’t have to sell drugs to make a good living. I want to show them you can go to school and be somebody. Lastly, I want to open more youth centers, schools, and programs for our young people in the world with no money or direction.
