American Idol has officially been cancelled after more than a decade on the air. The singing competition will end next year, after its 15th season.

The show responsible for making stars out of Carrie UnderwoodFantasia, Kelly Clarkson, Ruben Studdard, and a whole bunch of other talents over the years, isn’t a strong as it used to be.  Idol has seen a substantial ratings dip over the years averaging 30 million viewers in 2006, to 6.5 million last month. The clear drop in interest could have to do with competitor shows like The Voice, and the ever-changing roster of judges.

After the Simon Cowell Paula Abdul and eventually Randy Jackson, departed the show, Idol turned to recording artists to fill the slots like Jennifer Lopez, Steven Tyler, Nicki Minaj, and Mariah Carey. Lopez joined in 2010 before leaving for a season. Carey and Minaj were hired in her place and that season experienced extremely low ratings.

Lopez came back the next season along with Keith Urban, and newbie Harry Conick Jr. All three will return for the final season which will begin in January.
