IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What city and state are you from?
HUE L. HEF: Born in Chicago, Illinois
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What is your music background?
HUE L. HEF: I’ve been rapping since about the age of 15 or 16. My cousins and brother were always writing rhymes and battling each other or friends at home and somehow it just pulled me in. 1st rhyme I wrote started with “Oopsy Daisy Shockalocka Lazy” by 19 or 20 I joined up with a high school friend trying to get his label off the ground called No Face, after finally releasing my 1st mixtape (Go Time:The Mixtape) I linked up with a former co worker who goes by Xkizel and decided to join his team Gas Inc. (where Gas means GO). Gas Inc. has been my home for about 2 years now.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: Why do you want to record and release your own music?
HUE L. HEF: Outside of the obvious reasons as far being profitable and famous I want to because I feel I have a lot to offer the music industry, I believe I have a purpose in the industry, I don’t like some of today’s music and hear how other people feel about today’s music and I really want to change that image. I have a line in a song I made called “Got You Mane” in reference to success it says “some people say it sucks and I believe it but if you want to change it first I think you should achieve it.”
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What are your songs about?
HUE L. HEF: My music is about life, the ups, the downs, and side to sides, from break ups to make ups, from the struggle to the hustle. I put my emotions out there so that way it’s easier for the listener to make that connection. I put my life, my experiences, my thoughts, into my music from the bad to the good to give it that authentic flavor.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: Who are your musical influences?
HUE L. HEF: Jay-Z, Eminem, Joe Budden, Outkast, Big Sean, Slick Rick, 2 Chainz, Young Jeezy, Biggie, Erykah Badu, Kanye West, My Brother, Cousins, but out of them all I feel most of my influence comes from me, comparing myself now to myself in the past hast probable played the biggest role in my growth as an artist.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: How would you describe your music to people?
HUE L HEF: I like to say my music is easy to listen to, my music is just as approachable as I am. I’d like to think of my music as medicine. I could prescribe you a song, a verse, a line for any feeling or mood you may be in.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What makes you stand out from other artists?
HUE L HEF: I feel I have a different understanding of people, my music can connect with people on an emotional level. I feel people are attracted to my music because its something that they actually experience, not like listening to just another radio hit but something that they can learn from, whether they learn more about myself, or hear something that motivates them in some type of way. My music is for people who want more out of music.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: Tell us about one of the hardest challenges you had to face in your music career and how did you overcome?
HUE L HEF: Confidence in my own music for sure, starting out making music I’ve always had doubt in the things I was writing, I wasn’t even sure if I was doing it right. I’ve even quit making music a few times just because I wasn’t confident in the lyrics, but what helped me overcome my confidence issue was the false confidence I gave myself. I’m not saying that as in (I just decided I’m the best ever with wack rhymes) but I gave myself the confidence to continue writing those wack rhymes knowing that practice makes perfect. As my songs, lyrics, and content changed, my confidence grew and my music will continue to get better.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What are some upcoming projects you are currently working on?
HUE L HEF: I am currently almost finished with my second mixtape (GT2: Go Time) to be released before June 1st(my birthday) and my official album (no title) hopefully to be done by the end of this year
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What are your career goals? Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
HUE L HEF: I just want to be successful doing what I love the most. I plan to go to college to get my degree in business so in 10 years I plan to be a successful businessman. I love video games so I’d want something like a chain of video game stores and would like have made a major impact in Kansas’ music scene by putting more resources into my area.
