Chumz was born in Edmonton, Alberta, the second son of two affluent First Nation entrepreneurs. He grew up on the Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation, and in West Edmonton to attend secondary and high school. He comes from a musical and artistic family of Sioux cultural drumming and contemporary musicians. At a very young age he was inspired by movies and the performing arts. He was always interested in music, inspired by musicians and their artistic expression. Being exposed to the living conditions of Aboriginal people on reserve and the streets of Edmonton, he found sanctuary in music from many genres. The interest in music eventually inspired him to pursue a future in writing lyrics. Encouragement from his peers who at the time were his biggest influences led him to becoming a rapper and performer.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What city and state are you from?
OFFICIAL CHUMZ: I Hail from Edmonton Alberta, Canada, the City of Champions. I Was born and raised on the west side and there may be many cities like it or better. But this is my home.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What is your music background?
OFFICIAL CHUMZ: My musical journey started at a young age. From being a baby and humming song notes, to a elementary school student who was infatuated with musical instruments, performing arts and poetry to becoming a man and starting to perform for people who then encouraged me to pursue this dream. I come from a background of musicians and artists. My family is well known within traditional / cultural Drum scene across
North America and in some cases overseas. I also spent a lot of time with my now deceased uncle who was a gospel singer and also wrote his own music. My background ranges from performing arts as well as being a MC in this game we call rap.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What are your songs about?
OFFICIAL CHUMZ:My songs are about the struggle of being a Native American (First Nation) youth and man. We as people faced many obstacles not only within our surroundings but within ourselves, trying to find who we are in this melting pot we call North America or Canada. I come from a
family of hard workers, entrepreneurs, dreamers and risk takers. With those being the only positive outlets. I have also faced at a young age
addictions of many types. I only tell stories and write songs that we,as in me and my people, friends or relatives, have faced head on. I
like to laugh, I like to cry, I like to get angry in my music. most of all I like to have fun and I want to spread positivity through showing that not only in my actions but in my music that if you choose to move forward and pursue a dream that you do it wholeheartedly. I know no other way to create.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What is your favorite song to perform and why?
OFFICIAL CHUMZ: Right now my Favorite song is an intimate song about my choice to pursue this path; it’s called “Dream”. It has practically the whole story and emotion I’ve felt and how it pushed me to continue forward. I have spent plenty of evenings in bars, venues and stadiums being the man in the crowd. With that rush of wanting to be on stage, I became at home performing. Once I got on stage that was it, I was sold. So too me this song will always be a personal favorite too perform.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What has surprised you the most in the pursuit of a career in music?
OFFICIAL CHUMZ: How much emails and networking it takes. How having a presence whether it be online or within the scene is important. How reaching out to your supporters is always the most important. Also how you cannot take the streets with you in any type of business you want to
do. I came in with a hustler’s mentality thinking like most artists do that I will just steal the game away. Once I laid out the work for myself I realized this was going to take more than a drive to move forward. It was going to actually be work. and that is where I am now, I want to do this. Whether it’s being an artist or trying to help young artists who do not have an outlet. just the way I started, I would like to give that back.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: Who are your musical influences?
OFFICIAL CHUMZ: Rez Official, JOEY STYLEZ, Wu Tang Clan, Tupac, Johnny Cash, Flatbush Zombies, Micheal Jackson, James Brown, Curtis Mayfield, Shawn Bernard, Uncle Nelson, Kendrick, The Weeknd, Snoop, BIG, BIG PUNISHER, DIPSET, BONE THUGS, Action Bronson, UGK, SPM, SLAYER, Classical Music, BLUES, EDM, Kanye west, Lauryn Hill, Bob Marley, Immortal Technique, Que Rock, RASCALZ, JOEY BADASS, the sex pistols, Nirvana, Guns and Roses. Trust me when I say I can go on more. These are just some examples of music I have loved recently or from early on.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: How would you describe your music to people?
OFFICIAL CHUMZ: My Music is what makes up a flash of lightning. Lots of work behind it, but you may only see me for a second. My music makes me feel like I am putting a spark in people’s minds who also want to do well for themselves in a positive way. I would describe my music as inspirational music, as angry music as true grit hip hop. Literally coming from gravel roads to pavement and seeing that the sky is the limit. My music is for the kids, the people in the struggle who just want a little hope, for the non believers I would describe my music as their answer to the hard question of why I do this. Its love music, baby making music, “I hope to inspire a generation of Warriors” music.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What makes you stand out from other artists?
OFFICIAL CHUMZ: As far as artistry goes, I do not think or wish to stand out from those who are also passionate about their creativity. Those who have a passion for arts and not only musically. We are equal in this love, we all find the same medium in the arts. I know there is plenty of wack
rappers and plenty of terrible singers even within the industry, but every now and then a band, a singer, a rapper, someone, some one comes around and shows us that there is always a next level. Its not a format, you have to be brave and take yourself from comfort and try. Fail if you must, but learn from those failures. Put your absolute heart in it, and I will see us as equals.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What would you like to see changed in today’s music industry?
OFFICIAL CHUMZ: The whole “ride the wave’ of a trend could definitely change. I mean I get it that certain demographics want to hear the same music or style of music but I think as an industry head or person you would always want to try what’s new, or what’s creative, or what’s edgy. I mean
how does a lot of these albums and singles come out sounding the same. I swear if I put on the top 40 radio you’re going to hear the same type of music. I hear good stuff from time to time don’t get me wrong. I just mean for the most part, we do repeat and recycle some writers concepts to 30 different artists with the same producer and so on. Spending all this time on something that may not be cool in a few months. Personally the artists who always catch my ear, are those who are doing what they love, how they love. It could be any body. I just like fresh and that’s the type of thinking I would like to see, lets see something fresh. Money, cash hoes and whatever else people are into is 80s’. Let’s get to the Future.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What are some upcoming projects that you are currently working on?
OFFICIAL CHUMZ: I have two full albums ready to record and mix when I need them done, but for the time being I am prepping for an album release on July 14.”C.E.O. – The Anti Hero” Comes out on all digital Vendors that day, I am also planning an album release party to celebrate this occasion. there is some work being done to do a little touring this year or next, but for now I’m focusing on this album and getting it reviewed and submitted to award shows and what not. Plenty of stuff to do in the mean time also. I am also working with some artists for a future collaboration project but that’s still too early in the works.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What are your career goals? Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
OFFICIAL CHUMZ: In my marvelous house, having a coffee and breakfast reading my stock and investment portfolio, smiling as my family enjoys the fruits of my labor. I’m hoping I am very involved in business, but also heavily involved in music or music programs. creating outlets for kids who need it is definitely a priority. but I mostly see myself with my family and enjoying our lives together. seeing my boy grow, my ambitious wife flourish and my family all getting what they deserve. Its coming too, I have to see it through.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: How can your fans access your music and contact you?
OFFICIAL CHUMZ: I am hoping by now you can Google Chumz or CEO and you can find me but just on case I have an email firstname.lastname@example.org where I want to start connecting with people interested in my music or even just how I’m doing. Facebook is a tool I use a lot for connecting with fans and supporters my name is Chumz Biss on there. My SPAM twitter I call it, is @OfficialChumz and that is where I post music, shows, and anything
related to my music. There’s also reverbnation profiles and soundcloud profiles but at this point I will only use what I want to and right now those three mentioned will work best. With that peace, love, respect, and power.
