Hip-Hop / Pop recording artist Sanova (a.k.a. Marcus Brock) is renowned
for creating his own brand of “cinematic music,” which meshes witty lyrics with melodic choruses and a touch of pop & rock. His current album trilogy—comprising The Outlet, The Come Up LP, and Undefined LP, offers a three-part story explaining the history of Marcus Brock (real person), Sanova (artist) and Brocknova (primary character from his upcoming comic book series). Sanova has been recording since age 14─ inspired by the Playstation video game MTV Music Generator, which allowed him to discover his creativity by creating melodies, to which he added his own lyrics. In short order, his songs attracted the attention of a recording studio owner in Chicago. There, in a secluded warehouse, Sanova’s creativity burgeoned, inspired by the hit music of Eminem and Tupac. Sharing his music on MySpace, he rapidly collected fans and followers, to the tune of some 218,000 views. Meanwhile, he showcased his musical wares at the United Center in Chicago, before moving to Indiana, where his presence continued to grow. With an animated, freestyle vibe, Sanova began filling clubs in his base of Bloomington—packed with college kids in the summer months, who returned to their home states (and countries) and continued to spread the word. That led to a recording opportunity at Dallas-based Trademarc Studios, where Sanova recorded “Did I Stutter” and “R U Famous Yet.” The latter won an award at the Seattle Film Festival and was promoted on Comcast Cable networks. Besides promoting singles from his breakthrough debut album The Outlet LP, Sanova is currently working on his “highly anticipated” follow-up album: The Come Up LP.

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What city and state are you from?
SANOVA: I was born in Belzoni, Mississippi. I was raised in Bellwood and Justice, Illinois. I currently reside in Washington State for the past several years. From the south to the mid west to the west coast, that about sums up where I’m from.

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What is your music background?
SANOVA: I am a recording artist that started making music at age 14. It all started when I used MTV music generator for the Playstation 1. I started producing my first songs while using the video game software. I honed on my production skills and eventually started writing and recording my own music. I got signed to a local record label in downtown Chinatown where I used to produce beats in Chicago. Around the same time I got started, I was given the amazing opportunity to perform the half time show at the United Center, the Chicago Bulls stadium. That was my very first show. As time went on, I did shows in the Chicagoland area as well as Indiana. I later moved and traveled to the Bloomington, Indiana area, doing shows, house parties, and corner freestyles for college crowds. The Bloomington, Indiana college scene helped expand my music background. My name started to go both national and international. A few years later, I was fortunate to fly out to Dallas, Texas where I recorded my first singles at Marc Rob Studios. As time went on, when I moved to the north west, My music video “R U Famous Yet” went on to win at the Siff-Seattle International Film Festival and was featured on Comcast and Music Choice. As they say, the rest is history.

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: Why do you want to record and release your own music?
SANOVA: I just love making music. Honestly, without recording music, I don’t know where I would be or what I would be doing. It gives me a positive way to let it out, so to speak. It’s my outlet. I’m sure I’m not the only artist, musician, or person that feels that way. The reason why I release my own music is because I feel I have a unique story to tell. Thankfully I’ve found an artistic way of doing it and in the process, hopefully, motivate others to pursue their passions. Besides that, aren’t you tired of the same repetitive music of today? I believe the music scene lacks originality and ‘breath of fresh air’ quality that I believe my music possesses.

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What are your songs about?
SANOVA: My songs are all about creating a getaway, escape for the listener. Depending on what song title we’re talking about, each song talks about personal life experiences as well as from YOUR perspective. I tend to make relatable content. From poverty, overcoming obstacles, love, social issues, to uplifting undertones and just having a good time, there’s plenty of songs to choose from.

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: Who is your fan base directed towards?
SANOVA: My fan base is directed towards everyone honestly. From teenagers on up, people of all colors, sex, and creeds. As long as you have an open mind to give me a listen, I’m sure that─ at least─ one of my songs you might be able to relate to, enjoy, and hopefully make you a new fan. The everyday person trying to just get by, THAT’S MY FAN BASE! If someone hears one of my songs and it has a positive influence on them, it makes it all worthwhile.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: Who are your musical influences?
SANOVA: My musical influences are wide and diverse. As far as Hip Hop/Rap goes: Eminem, Lupe Fiasco, Kanye West, Tupac, Big L and Jay Z. Michael Jackson, Justin Timberlake, are my pop influences. When it comes to rock: Foo Fighters, Queen, and Muse make my list. Ironically, when I just sit and write my music though, I often listen to chill or film music that set the mood. So you can add Hans Zimmer within the near top of my musical influences. There’s more, but those are my top musical influences.

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: How would you describe your music to people?
SANOVA: Besides uplifting, driven, and passionate. I would describe my music as genre blending, storytelling with rhythm and melody, with a movie-like feel to it. Imagine putting headphones on while watching your favorite movie. Now close your eyes. That’s the experience I like to think my music describes.

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What makes you stand out from other artists?
SANOVA: What helps me stand out from other artist is my originality, voice, style, sound, message, and genre range. As far as my vocals go, you can hear the passion behind the words I sing. While at a moment’s notice, my voice can switch from a lot of energy to smooth and melodic (if the song demands it, of course). As far as style, a lot of my music has a movie-like feel to them. I call it ‘cinematic music’. As an album, the songs connect to tell an overall story. Yet each song can also stand alone as singles too. My sound is very polished which gives my music a commercial quality to them. At the end of the day, the message matters, so the majority of my songs’ content set out to uplift the listener. From hip hop, rap, rock, pop, and some R&B, my genre range stands out as well from other artist.

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What are some upcoming projects you are currently
working on?
SANOVA: Well, right now I am currently promoting singles from my debut
album ,The Outlet LP, out now on iTunes, Google Play, Amazon Mp3 and
Sanova.co. I am also currently working on production on my second, follow
up album, The Come Up LP. Those are my two MAJOR projects I’m working on at the
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What are your career goals? Where do you see
yourself in 10 years?
SANOVA: My career goals are getting solid radio play, music videos in rotation, world touring, endorsement deals and brand recognition. I also want to license my music in film. In ten years, I see Sanova, my brand, and my name being well established as a household name. I see myself branching off into producing music for film, commercials, video games, and entertainment. In a decade, I still see me recording albums. I also plan on launching my ‘BrockNova’ comic book series and brand -www.brocknova.com, which currently ties into my music’s storyline. Yup, that’s currently where I see myself in ten years. Just a matter of time.

  1. Nova is great. He just keeps getting great. Ever song he does is the bomb. From here on out he won’t put you down with his music.

  2. Some of the best and realist hip hop I’ve heard in a minute. He’s got amazing potential, and will no doubt be successful in this game!

  3. I met Marcus back in Btown “Bloomington, IN” while I was working for a telemarketing firm and had the opportunity to become good friends with Nova “Marcus Brock”. I spent a lot of time watching Nova preform in clubs, house parties and street corners. From the start, I knew there was something different about him that set him apart from all of the other repetitive music you could turn on your radio at any time of the day and hear. Nova has a story to tell in his music. You can tell this is his passion because it bleeds through his pen when he writes and it comes out when he talks and performs. Marcus has been such a great example to me as a person that has a dream and never gives up no matter what the cost or path that dream may place him on. I know that if you have a dream and a passion, Nova has a lot to say through the testimony of his life. His story has encouraged me to take risks and face challenges in running a business to strive for success. If you read this Nova, I love you bro. If you haven’t listened to Sanova go and get his music! I promise it will encourage and inspire you to reach higher.
