IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What city and state are you from?
TIFFANY HILL: I was born in Portland, Oregon. Raised in Eugene up until the age of 14 when I moved out. Since then, I’ve traveled around aimlessly. All the way from Salem, Oregon to Mt. Dora, Florida. And I guess I will continue to roam until I find what feels like a home.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What is your music background?
TIFFANY HILL: I was in choir at church and at school for the duration of about ten years. During that time, I had access to my parents grand piano. After I grew out of my 5 dollar keyboard, I started to teach myself how to play it. Also taught myself with a lesson book how to play the acoustic guitar. I write songs on both as well as sing acapella. I’ve been singing my entire life as far as I can even remember. I guess it’s easier for me to communicate what’s really going on in my life by writing lyrics to a song and singing it out loud. It’s funny though, thinking about what all lengths I would go to just to make some music or to sing a point across. Like, for example, I used to check out Mozart and Beethoven CD’s from the library and write lyrics to classical music. Yeah, I came up with some pretty psycho sounding songs more than just a few times. Also, I used to have this old school tape recorder I found in my parents attic. I used it for years to record myself singing. I’d play back the recording and if I was dissatisfied, I’d hit rewind and record over and over again until it met my standards. Sometimes I’d go to school not having had any sleep whatsoever the night before. After moving out at age 14, I started reaching out more publicly with my musical talents. I’ve done tons of talent shows, open mic night’s, and karaoke. I started recording in an actual studio with an underground music group and later on decided to record on my own using the songs I’d written. I’ve performed at bars in Eugene, Oregon as well as done a few benefit performances for some large institutions.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: Why do you want to record and release your own music?
TIFFANY HILL: I feel like I have a way of relating to my audience. I like to give my fans something to talk about. I feel like I am an inspiration to others as far as a music career and also as someone helping to guide those who are struggling as I have to do better for themselves. It’s so fulfilling and validating for me to be creating something that is in constant demand because I know I am helping to give what is wanted. It inspires me to do better even!
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What are your songs about?
TIFFANY HILL: My songs are about real life. My life. Your life. They are about painful moments either I have lived through and ones that I’ve seen other live through: romantic heartaches, joy, trials and tribulations─ on an individual type level.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: Who are your musical influences?
TIFFANY HILL: Joss stone, Fiona Apple, Erika Badu, Maria Carey, Tony Braxton, Alanis Morrisette, Jewel, Phil Collins, Ani Difranco, Mary J Blige, T.L.C., and Norah Jones. Just to name a few. I would say my music is diverse, different, entrancing at times, familiar, unfamiliar, easy to get lost in. It’s crazy! But it’s crazy good, not crazy bad.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What makes you stand out from other artists?
TIFFANY HILL: I stand out because I’m loud! I learn from everyone around me. I sing to heart not money. I have been in the wreckage and pulled myself out of the wreckage. I’M BROKE? Haha! Actually, I don’t really have a good answer to this because I believe that every artist is super special so I can’t really say I’m going do any better than they do or stand out more than them. Because it isn’t a competition if you think about it. I see the music industry as it should be, not how it is. To me, it’s more like as a world of musicians we are a team striving for the same things in life. Like we are fighting a war together to save those who love us for what we are doing. Not like we are all headed for the same goal and we must eliminate the others because only one can claim the gold. This isn’t a survivor TV show. This is the real deal. Well, I guess I actually stand out maybe cause I see this matter the way I do.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What are some of the challenges you had to face as a musician?
TIFFANY HILL: One of the hardest challenges I’ve had to face as a musician is financing my projects. I overcame it by growing a fan base, obtaining solid friends, and being loyal to them consistently. And not taking for granted those who are wanting to invest in my career or those who have helped me at all in life. And by giving back- donating my time to help others as I’ve been helped. I would’ve said being homeless was one of the hardest challenges but to be completely honest, it really gave me some time to connect with the deeper side of myself and get to a more open and willing state of mind.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What are some upcoming projects you are currently working on?
TIFFANY HILL: I am almost ready to release my first album, House of Dirt. All the songs have been edited/mixed and mastered already, and I am just waiting on the cover to be designed. It should be finished within the next couple months. Also I just made my own website and it’s up and running. Although, I am still currently doing what I can to modify and perfect it.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What are your career goals? Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
TIFFANY HILL: I want to really crack into everyone’s mind and make songs that will be played long after I am gone. I want to change some lives, sign some shirts, buy my family a new car etc. I want to have a record label, open a store, sign some contracts too. I want to relax eventually too. And I want to help people love each other. Silly goals I know, but they are mine so I’ll tell them to you.
