IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What city and state are you from?

VANTE POEMS: I am originally from a small city in Upstate New York. It’s 45 minutes away from Syracuse called Utica, NY. I lived in Utica until the end 2013. I moved to Ottawa, Ontario Canada, to start a family with my wife who was pregnant at the time with my daughter, our first child. I wanted more opportunities for my daughter far as education, schooling, and healthcare.

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What is your music background?

VANTE POEMS: I don’t have much of a substantial music background. My mother can sing very well. I was in a church choir when I was younger at ST. Matthew’s Temple COGIC as a kid. My mother was the choir director, and I would always feel at ease when she sings. Other than that I don’t have much of a music background. I like to think I am the one creating the music background for my children and generations to come.

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: Why do you want to record and release your own music?

VANTE POEMS: At first my creating music was just a hobby to me. I know where I’m from if you say you’re an artist or a rapper no one is going to take you serious. I started a Soundcloud account, and strangers who turned into fans would give me positive feedback about my music. I made a mixtape and put it on Datpiff called “Just Get To Know Me” I didn’t tell anyone, I just through it out there. Since then I’ve been getting radio play, new followers on twitter, fan mail, and magazine features. So as long as people want to hear my creativeness and my life stories though music, then I would happily love to release my music and record. The reason why I made music in the first place is because it’s therapeutic. Music always made me feel at ease in many cases.

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What are your songs about?

VANTE POEMS: My songs will always be about a situation I been through or going through nothing more and nothing less. The songs I’m working on as we speak are more about past relationships or run in with females in the pass. It all depends what the topic is about for the song, but it will always be real.

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: Who is your fan base directed towards?

VANTE POEMS: My fan base is directed towards people most likely 14-40 just because they can probably most relate with situations I’ve been through. There’s no specific gender, or race I want to categorize for my music. My fan base is directed towards people that can relate to me, and anyone I’m able to inspire.

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: Who are your musical influences?

VANTE POEMS: I have a few musical influences. Lil Wayne was the first rapper I listened to for the lyrics. My mom would buy me Lil Romeo or Lil Bow Wow albums. And I had every Bow Wow album till this day. But the first time I heard Da Drought 3 I was with a mentor. His name is Levar Mathis. He asked me who’s my favorite rapper. I said Lil Bow Wow, he punched me and my chase, took me for a drive and he started playing Da Drought 3 by Lil Wayne. That was the first time realizing how creative you can be rapping. Even though I couldn’t relate with his lyrics like I did with Bow Wow, Wayne’s lyrics made me laugh. I’ll be in class and the teacher would say something that Wayne said in one of his songs, and I would laugh out of no where like “Oh that’s what he meant.” So lyrical influence I like to say Wayne, his creativeness and how he thinks outside the box inspires me. Hopefully I can get to his creativeness. Drake and J. Cole are my greatest influences when I write my music. Drakes love songs are always relatable. J. Cole’s struggles are relatable too, and you can hear Cole’s realness in everything he writes. So I like to put Lil Wayne’s creativeness in my “Late Night Love Poems” project with Drake’s melodies, love songs, and type beats.

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: How would you describe your music to people?

VANTE POEMS: The best way to describe my music to fans and non fans is just picture those late nights you stayed up and you start to over think everything. So you smoke a blunt and hop in your whip, drive around your hood bumping with the music turned all the way up, and you ride while you trying to put your thoughts together. My music is for those people.

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What makes you stand out from other artists?

VANTE POEMS: What makes me stand out from other artists is my worth ethic. I have never met another artist that works harder than me. I am always working on another song or a project. I am never out of ideas or muse. I only been doing music seriously for less than a year, and I made more songs than the other local rappers I know who been doing this since middle school. My music is definitely different. A lot people categorize me with Drake and Bryson Tiller. But they can actually sing. I am just using my vocals in a way it sounds good over a beat with no auto tune. Last person I know who did that was Ja Rule. I also have up to par lyrics, which I like to use with my vocals. The next project I’m working on is going to be 7-9 songs just me. I’m on the hook, and on the verses. My fans have told me that my concepts when I write songs are phenomenal so I take pride in that. So I am an unsigned artist that has a project coming out. I did not want features and did not want a DJ host. I wrote every single song from the concept, hooks, verses and ad libs in less than 2 months, and releasing it free as a mixtape. That is what makes me stand out from other artists.

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What are your career goals? Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

VANTE POEMS: I have a few career goals I would like to achieve. Of course my number one is goal is to generate income so my wife and kids don’t have to work another day in their life. One goal I have is to be on The Breakfast Club interview with CthaGod, DJ Envy and Angela Yee. Another goal would be is to be signed to a label and to release an album. I want to be talked about and have more or a core fan base. I want to be a topic of conversation in any household. Once established and sold at least 4 albums, in 10 years I see my self well established in the music industry, have at one type of merchandise, but most of all I would like to be in at least one movie.

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: How can your fans access your music and contact you?

VANTE POEMS: My fans can contact me at

I love to listen to feedback, positive or negative. I love to talk to my fans and ask them questions about upcoming records. I love to engage with my fans. Sometimes I will ask for them to be in a music video or come to the studio if you give cool vibes.
