IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What city and state are you from?
MOOK DA GENERAL: I was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. I never lived there or spent any of my childhood in the city. After moving around a few times my family finally settled in Hinesville. Georgia. I spent most of my childhood there. After 7th grade we moved to Warner Robins, Georgia where I finished school. So I really claim both, Hinesville and Warner Robins, as home. Now I’m currently living in McAlester, OK.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What is your music background?
MOOK DA GENERAL: I grew up around musicians. It seems like almost everyone in my family had their hand in music at some point. Some have played instruments or had a chance to record professionally. My uncle use to work at a label and he still produces good music. At a young age, I learned to play the drums by ear and use to try and make my own beats on my piano and computer. I was ok at it, but I had more rhymes in my head then beats so I started to focus more on rhyming. I recorded my first few songs with my group GTB in high school. In 2010 when while living in Japan, I met P.Dot Da Poet who had a production company called P3productionz, now formally known as Arices LLC. We formed a group called “F.L.O.W.” and released some single and a mixtape called “Ju-on“. In 2013 I released my first solo mixtape hosted by Dj Smooth, titled “M.O.T.(Moment of Truth)”. In 2015 I performed on Coast2Coast’s tour in Oklahoma City.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: Why do you want to record and release your own music?
MOOK DA GENERAL: This is where I fit in. The thing about music that I like the most is that no matter what, someone can relate to you. There is nothing else I want to do. I want to go on tour. I want to connect with fans from across the country and around the world because I know its people from my home town that will never get that chance.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What are your songs about?
MOOK DA GENERAL: Life, the good times and the bad times. I don’t like to limit myself to just being a “this” or “that” kind of rapper. I’ve always been told that I hold a lot in but in my music I get to let it all out, the anger, frustration, dreams, and struggles. I think people of different backgrounds will be able to relate to a lot of my music.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: Who is your fan base directed towards?
MOOK DA GENERAL: If I had to narrow it down I’d say anywhere from a teenager to someone in their 30s. I just like to make it relatable so I make songs based of what I feel.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: Who are your musical influences?
MOOK DA GENERAL: Growing up in Georgia, Pastor Troy, T.I., Ludacris, and Camoflauge (R.I.P.), are just some of the many names. Nowadays I listen to a lot of J.Cole, G-eazy, Wiz, Kendrick and Hopin. I feel those rappers backstories are the most relatable to me now and have been for the last few years.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: How would you describe your music to people?
MOOK DA GENERAL: Yin-Yang, because you will hear the good and the bad side. The inner thought, because some songs I like to dig deeper with my lyrics and say something we all think but won’t say. My music is real, because there is nothing I’m afraid to say in my music. Diverse, because it’s not many styles of music I won’t try.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What makes you stand out from other artists?
MOOK DA GENERAL: I bring real situations to the table, real dreams and a real lifestyle. I talk about working for what you want in life. I stay humble and I’m always me. I don’t pretend to be something I’m not. This business is not an overnight thing so I want the fans to see and hear the life style progression.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What are some upcoming projects you are currently working on?
MOOK DA GENERAL: Currently working on two mixtapes, “Shots Fired” which will be released Feb 27th and “M.F.H.” (Miles From Home) which doesn’t have a release date right now. I will be part of an Oklahoma tour Feb 18-21 alongside Young LA, Lil David, Yatta Bone and other artist. More shows are in the works.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What are your career goals? Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
MOOK DA GENERAL: I want to be established in the music industry and bring my team with me. I have a gang of people that I work with and we are a family. This is all of our dreams. We spend most if not all our days working for moments like this. We want to start our own label and company for other independent artist hungry to reach that next level.
