Real. Raw. Gritty. Soulful. Fiery. Bold. Electric. Smoky. Soaked in Whisky.
Within month’s of the release of her soulful fiery debut, ‘Wildfire’ – Megan Wilde was chosen as winner of an LA Music Critic Award, a string of international songwriting contests, a few coveted Tv/Film Music Licensing Deals, a National college radio deal, performances at iconic places like Lincoln Center and Key Arena, and she’s received glowing national and international press for her bold, sultry, and heartfelt singing. With a scorching voice that knows no boundaries, a fiery on stage presence, and a robust and bodacious soul for crafting music– Megan Wilde’s music has been compared to the likes of Aretha Franklin, The Black Keys, Beyonce, Adele, Hozier, and Elle King.
While Seattle Music Insider has declared Megan Wilde a “soul powerhouse” and the Examiner exclaimed, ‘”Wilde could very well become a musical force with which to be reckoned” – Who is the woman behind the music?
Megan B. Wilde was a school yard nickname given to her for her talent for climbing trees, getting in fights with boys, and running around covered in dirt with wild untamed lioness hair. You could say she’s always been a bit rough around the edges. Growing up in a small town outside of Chicago never suited her style, and at 15 she found her ticket out. She was accepted into one of the world’s finest performing arts schools – Interlochen Academy of The Fine Arts. Day in and day out she studied music and art from the masters. Her teachers quickly learned that while she was talented – ball gowns, opera, and being neat as a button was not her thang. Once you’ve been seduced by the brash, rusty, soulful voices – there is no turning back.
Fake ID in hand, Megan says she ”deliriously roamed the south side of Chicago desperate for any music that shook my bones and howled to the darkest parts of my soul” Her performances around the city quickly earned her the nickname ‘Baby Blues”. Traveling around the country and soaking up music, Megan somehow landed in Seattle with just a suitcase, a dream, and a independent boss lady attitude.
Look out for Megans debut EP release -Wildfire- on May 19th, 2015. When recording Wildfire at one of Seattle’s top studios, London Bridge, the artist brought in mastering wizard – Howie Wineberg. Howie is a 4 time Grammy nominee with an estimated quarter of a billion records sold. Producing, composing and arranging the material on the record (with the exception of “Spoonful”), Wilde also takes the helm on Wurlitzer, piano, and of course, the powerhouse vocals. Wildfire combines elements of indie-rock, blues, soul and R & B. Her debut album has been showered with early praise from critics around the nation and is just a ‘spoonful’ of things to come.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What city and state are you from?
MEGAN WILDE: I’m an adventurer. I’ve lived in many places through out my life – Utah, Illinois, California, Washington, and Tennessee. The longest place I’ve stayed anywhere, and the city that has my heart is Seattle, WA.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What is your music background?
MEGAN WILDE: I’ve been obsessed with big brash soulful vocalists before I even knew what I was I was singing. It was just born inside me. My mother was a Tae-Kwan-Do champion and I grew up listening to her beat the crap out of her punching bag to Red Hot Chilli Peppers, George Thorogood, and any Southern Blues/Rock bad a**es. When I was in California, I used to sit on the steps of my apartment building singing TLC, En Vogue, Lauryn Hill, and Tupac with the neighborhood girls. From there – believe or not – I got accepted into one of the toughest and most revered schools for Opera with very little training. I’ll love singing until my dying day, but I longed to be a composer. I was jealous down to the bones watching composers conducting symphonies. Although classical music is gorgeous, it never felt real to me in the way that it felt when Tina Turner sings.
From there I headed to Chicago and immersed myself in the dirty blues scene. Looking back I was fearless to the point of recklessness. I had a fake ID and would travel to places no one else would dare go with me, just so I could hear people sing about their pain from the depths of their soul. I might’ve been crazy. I headed to Seattle and no one really cared what I could sing like – so it gave me an opportunity to learn piano, songwriting, and producing. I headed down there for the rock scene and ended up being a dancer in a funk and disco band. I had my sequins, my high heels, and my ass shaking. I learned on the spot how to make seedy casino crowds have the time of their lives. My music is coming out as a concoction of all of the American experiences I’ve had as a nomadic free spirit. In all the ways, the music where I’ve lived has shaped who I am as a person. I am the performer, pianist, composer, and producer of my debut album and there isn’t really anything out there like what I’m doing.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: Why do you want to record and release your own music?
MEGAN WILDE: Music is my everything and my calling in life. I have to do it.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What are your songs about?
MEGAN WILDE: My songs are pictures of my life. I believe my highest duty as an artist is to be authentic, so I write about something even if it hurts. I like to shine light on things that people hide in the dark out of shame.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: Who is your fan base directed towards?
MEGAN WILDE: I don’t think about things like that. I don’t believe any real art can be created that way.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: Who are your musical influences?
MEGAN WILDE: There are to many to list! People say my sound is like Aretha Franklin meets The Black Keys. I’m compared to Hozier, Elle King, Gin Wigmore, Adele, and Alicia Keys.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: How would you describe your music to people?
MEGAN WILDE: My music is gritty soul with a** shaking swagger.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What makes you stand out from other artists?
MEGAN WILDE: Well, I don’t need a computer to sing for me. There’s a new generation of music coming out, and I’m excited to be a part of it.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What are some upcoming projects you are currently working on?
MEGAN WILDE: I was just signed with Crucial Custom to create custom music for Film and TV. I’m finishing up the pieces of my debut album, Taming The Wilde. I’ve put my heart and soul into it.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What are your career goals?
MEGAN WILDE: All of them.
IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
MEGAN WILDE: I see myself in a stone house by the sea with a wrap around porch dancing in my barefoot to Stevie Wonder playing on my record player. At the same time composing bad a** music for a Quentin Tarantino soundtrack on my grandmother’s Steinway. Is that specific enough? Lol.
