Malachi X was born as Dusty S. Garret on March 13, 1986, in West Palm Beach, Florida. He resided to Baton Rouge in 2000, and attended at The School of Art at a very young age. By using his voice through music, Malachi X expresses his challenges in life and what he saw being raised in the slums.

Malachi X began his career alongside with fellow artists Baton Rouge natives Kevin Gates and Lil Boosie in the early 2000’s. The three collaborated on Gates’ second mixtape, All or Nuthin’, and was released in 2008. Malachi X described it as, “a lot of pain… a lot of true stories.”

Malachi X was signed to local record label Dead Game Records in Baton Rouge, Louisiana as a songwriter/artist.  He is known for his hooks and is defined as the hook king of the streets. It grasp your attention in a catchy repetition way to hook people into the lyrics.

Popular songs such as; Take A Ride, 69, and Hit U From Back, that was featured on Kevin Gates mixtape. He was discovered by A&R Bigga Rankin and produced a compilation mixtape I-10 connect that featured artists like Young Ready and Lil One The Champ. It was placed on media sites and gain over 200k viewers within 2 months of being released.

The CEO of Dead Game Records was sentenced to prison for eight (8) years and meanwhile Kevin Gates is incarcerated for three (3) years which caused the label and Malachi X put its career on hold.

Malachi X started his own corporation Malachi X Music, and released his first solo mixtape HOOK KING Game Dead vol. 1, on DatPiff.com in 2016. The second mixtape, CAUGHT UP, is also completed and will be releasing in January 2017. The events in “We Try,” was based on a true story that is inspired by the Black Lives Matters movement during the Alton Sterling’s case and is featured in WorldStarHipHop.com. He is now working on his third mixtape.

Malachi X is known for his lyricism and demonstrates reverence for hip-hop’s roots. It’s clear that this young artist is being primed for the big leagues, and we know he won’t disappoint. With his caliber of talent it’s only inevitable that Malachi X is next up in the  music industry.


IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What city and state are you from?

MALACHI X: Malachi X ‘aka’ Dusty Garret was born on March 13, 1986 in West Palm Beach, Florida. In 2000 he moved to Baton Rouge, Louisiana to start his music career.

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What is your music background?

MALACHI X: I was signed to a local record label Dead Games Records in 2007 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, alongside with label mate Kevin Gates. I worked with other artists from Baton Rouge such as Lil Boosie, Lil Phat, Hurricane Chris, Max Minelli, and also a compilation with A&R Bigga Rankin.

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What are your songs about?

MALACHI X: I write music based on real life experiences, watching and learning the streets at a very young age. It gave me a lot to write about; the struggles of being raised in the hood, what I want in life, and the visions of the hustle.

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What is your favorite song to perform and why?

MALACHI X: My favorite song to perform is a song called, “Dump Truck.”   The energy of the song is upbeat and gives the people a natural vibe. The crowd goes crazy when they listen to it. I love to see the people’s reaction when they connect to this song. It’s a world wide banger. Dump Truck!

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What has surprised you the most in the pursuit of a career in music?

MALACHI X: Seeing the people’s reaction to my music, riding and playing in it in their cars, posting it on their personal media sites, and mainly people are crying because of their personal relationship with the lyrics. It’s an amazing feeling. It makes me feel like I’m doing it for all the right reasons and touching people with my words.

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: Who are your musical influences?

MALACHI X: Artists like; Lauryn Hill, 2pac, and Bob Marley, they made real music that people can relate to. They spoke with wisdom and was outspoken. They wasn’t scared to voice their opinions, which made me say, “Hey I want to be in their ballpark.”

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: How would you describe your music to people?

MALACHI X: My music will make you listen. I have a great new sound that no one else has. I am one of a kind. The lyrics that I have are very demanding, powerful, and have a real sense of music.  My lyrics always have a message from the beats to the hooks are all hits. I am known as the Hook King of the streets. When you play my mixtape, you can just pop it in and let it roll, it’s real music.

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What makes you stand out from other artists?

MALACHI X: The brand that I’ve created is one of a kind. From the looks, to my personality, and being a people’s person. Also, the sound that I have is new. It’s not like what’s ever been in the industry and that’s missing in the today’s music. The impact that my hooks gives, you will never have with any other artists. It’s a 100% percent chance of being a hit, a banger. When you look at me, you wouldn’t dare to think I would sound so good.

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What would you like to see changed in today’s music industry?

MALACHI X: I would like to see different types of genres come together and created a new sound; Rock & Roll collaborating with an R&B sound, and a Gospel artist collaborating with an international rapper.

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What are some upcoming projects that you are currently working on?

MALACHI X: I just completed the Caught Up mixtape, by working with producers such as; John Boii who’s one of Future’s producers, and also Greedy Money who’s one of Yo Gotti’s producers. I recorded my music at Industry Standard Studio with engineer Guss Make My Beats, in Baton Rouge, that I am planning on releasing in January 2017. So far, I’ve shot three videos from the Caught Up mixtape. It will be released before the mixtape releases.   For my next project, I’m planning on working with powerhouse producer Dj Mustard and SmokedOut Lex Luger.

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What are your career goals? Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

MALACHI X: My goals are to be working with some of the top artists in the industry. I want to write hooks for different artists and have my music be in high demand. I want to see myself as being the number one top artist on the billboards and perhaps pursuing my acting career in movies. I can see myself being a major deal in the music industry within 10 years. I want to be able to sign artists to my own label and have its highest peak.
