The creator of “SpongeBob SquarePants,” Stephen Hillenburg, died following a battle with ALS, Nickelodeon announced on Nov. 27, 2018. He was 57. Hillenburg’s cartoon made its debut on Nickelodeon in 1999 and attracted viewers both young and old. It breached out into two films and a Broadway production. “We are incredibly saddened by the news that Steve Hillenburg has passed away following a battle with ALS. He was a beloved friend and long-time creative partner to everyone at Nickelodeon, and our hearts go out to his entire family,” the network said in a statement. The creator, above, in Tokyo in 2006, revealed he was suffering from Lou Gehrig’s disease in 2017. This is very sad , due to families loving Sponge Bob over the years.
