Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman — the notorious Mexican drug kingpin — has been found guilty on 10 felony charges following a three-month trial. He’s expected to spend the rest of his life behind bars at a high security U.S. prison.
According to ABC News, El Chapo was convicted by an anonymous Brooklyn federal jury on Tuesday morning (February 12).
The United States Department of Justice website explains he was charged with “being a principal operator of a continuing criminal enterprise – the Mexican organized crime syndicate known as the Sinaloa Cartel – a charge that includes 26 drug-related violations and one murder conspiracy.”
Of course, this isn’t the first time El Chapo has been in prison — he’s notoriously escaped twice.
Now, he faces a mandatory sentence of life imprisonment at his sentencing, which is scheduled for June 25.
Countless rappers have cited El Chapo in their music, including The Game on the appropriately titled “El Chapo,” Gucci Mane on “Cartel Talk,” Fashawn on “Hola Santiago” and Fat Trel on “Walking Thru My Hood.”
