The Rock announces that Jumanji 3 has wrapped filming. It came as a bit of a surprise to fans of 1995’s Jumanji when Sony announced it would be making a new film based on the children’s novel by Chris Van Allsburg. Though there was some initial confusion as to whether the film would be a reboot or a remake, it soon became obvious that Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle wouldn’t be a half-baked take on the original.
However, as many Jumanji fans are aware, the original 1995 film was led by the late Robin Williams, prompting initial concerns that those were far too big shoes to fill. Yet, right from the start, Dwayne Johnson (who starred in and produced the film), was clear with fans that his intentions were not to forget Williams and his contributions to Jumanji, but instead to create something that honored the universe and timeline that Williams had helped to create. The end result was impressive indeed, proving that Jumanji: Welcome to the Junglewas neither a reboot nor a remake, but a sequel of sorts – and one that substantially outperformed the original at the box office. This was a new franchise, with new opportunities that, so far, Jumanji fans have taken to.
